Chapter 4 - The Tarp on the RoofThe next morning, Saturday, the Ohio sky turned a dark, bruised purple. A massive summer thunderstorm warning was issued for the county.

At 7:00 AM, Martin called Audrey's phone three times. Audrey let every call go straight to voicemail.

Finally, Martin sent a text:

MARTIN: Audrey, where are you? You left half the roof open! The underlayment is down but the top section isn't finished! It's going to rain by noon! Get over here right now!

Audrey sat at her sunlit kitchen island, wearing a comfortable silk robe, sipping a mug of hot cinnamon coffee while Daniel cooked pancakes beside her.

She typed a reply:

AUDREY: I suggest you use the $12,000 you saved to hire a professional contractor.

Thirty seconds later, Martin's name flashed across her screen. She answered, placing the phone on speaker.

"Audrey! Are you out of your mind?!" Martin roared over the line. "The weather radar says severe storms in three hours! If you don't finish the roof, water is going to ruin the master bedroom!"

"Then I suggest you put on your boots and carry the shingles up yourself, Dad," Audrey replied, her voice smooth and cold as marble. "Since you think I'm such a tragic joke on your big screen."
