Chapter 8 - The Proposal under the Stars

Six months after our reconciliation, on a warm, starlit evening in July, Julian and I hosted the annual Phoenix Rising Charity Gala on the oceanfront terrace of the Beverly Hills Hotel.
Over five hundred doctors, philanthropists, and recovered young patients gathered under crystal chandeliers and white floral arbors.
I wore a custom-designed, backless emerald-silk gown by a renowned Italian designer who had created the dress specifically to celebrate and accentuate the intricate scar patterns across my shoulders and spine.
I stood on the podium, addressing the packed ballroom to thunderous, standing applause after announcing that our foundation had successfully funded over five thousand free reconstructive surgeries nationwide.
After the gala, Julian led me out onto the private rooftop terrace overlooking the illuminated skyline of Los Angeles.
The warm night breeze carried the fragrance of blooming jasmine from the gardens below.
Julian took both of my hands into his, looking into my eyes with a look of such breathtaking, profound devotion that my breath caught in my throat.
"Maya," Julian spoke, his voice rich, steady, and full of raw love. "Three years ago, you walked into my clinic and taught me what true courage looks like. You turned your deepest pain into an ocean of healing for this world. You are my partner, my inspiration, and the love of my life."
Julian reached into his tuxedo pocket, dropping onto one knee beneath the starlit sky.
He opened a velvet box, revealing a magnificent, five-carat emerald-cut diamond ring set in platinum, flanked by two delicate rose-gold bands.
"Maya Sterling," Julian said, his eyes glistening with tears. "Will you marry me? Will you spend the rest of your life building a world of light and love by my side?"
Tears of pure, boundless joy spilled over my cheeks.
May you like
"Yes, Julian!" I whispered, throwing my arms around his neck as he stood. "A thousand times, yes!"
Julian lifted me into his arms, kissing me deeply beneath the California stars, holding me close against his beating heart.
