Chapter 1 - The Cold Tower

The snow fell so quietly outside Hail & Partners Tower that the city of Midtown Manhattan felt both breathtakingly beautiful and intensely cruel. Meline Brooks stood shivering on the pavement, holding a paper bag containing dinner that had grown completely cold nearly two hours earlier. Her fingers were numb, and her thin coat provided little defense against the biting winter wind. Yet, she refused to leave. Because her husband, Grayson Hail, had promised he would meet her. Because she still trusted him, clinging to the belief that marriage meant enduring and waiting.
Most people called her Maddie. Standing alone beneath the falling snow, she was about to learn the most painful lesson of her life: the person you trust most is often the one who knows precisely how to break you. Grayson had excused himself earlier, claiming an urgent business meeting for his rapidly growing technology company, Hail Innovations. Meline checked her phone yet again; no messages, no missed calls, and her direct calls went straight to voicemail.

Suddenly, a sharp laugh pierced the cold air. Across the street, a black luxury car pulled up to the curb. Meline’s heart seized before her mind could catch up. She recognized the posture, the confidence, and the unmistakable silhouette. Grayson stepped out—not alone, and certainly not from a meeting. A striking woman in a vibrant red dress followed him closely. As she reached out to touch his shoulder with familiar ease, Grayson broke into a genuine, radiant smile—a warmth Meline hadn't seen directed at her in months.
Before Meline could process the agony, the woman whispered something in his ear, he laughed, and right there on the sidewalk twenty feet away, they kissed. Meline felt paralyzed, the cold air suddenly stripped of all sensation. Her phone buzzed in her pocket with an anonymous text message: Walk away, Meline. He's more dangerous than you think. As she stared back at Grayson and the mysterious woman in red, a terrifying realization took root: infidelity might not even be the worst thing he was hiding.
