Chapter 17 - The Charter Beneath the Bell|

The recording continued as guards rushed toward the platform.
Gabriel's voice was older than the one on the tape recorder, but unmistakably his.
"The original Moretti charter was written after the family survived its first internal war. It established that the family businesses must be governed by a council, not controlled by a single heir. The Black Rose was designed to protect that agreement."
Adrian fought against Dante's grip.
"Shut it off!"
Nobody moved to help him.
Gabriel continued.
"My father concealed the charter when he decided that power mattered more than justice. Adrian helped him hide it. Together, they rewrote the succession rules and created a system that would reward obedience rather than responsibility."
The screen displayed a scanned document bearing the signatures of the family's founders.
The charter was clear.
The heir recognized by the Black Rose would become the guardian of the family archive, but would not automatically inherit control of every business.
The governing council would remain responsible for legal operations.
No marriage could be required as a condition of inheritance.
I stared at the words.
The marriage selection had been a lie built on top of a lie.
Adrian had used the old will to keep Dante searching for a bride while he quietly transferred assets and concealed evidence.
He had expected the succession test to fail forever.
He had not expected me.
Dante released Adrian and stepped away.
"You built this entire scheme around a rule that never existed."
Adrian straightened his jacket.
"The family needed a leader."
"The family needed the truth."
Adrian laughed.
"You think a document changes anything? Half the people in this room have benefited from my decisions. The other half are afraid of what happens if I lose."
Victoria stepped forward.
"Then let them be afraid."
She handed Rebecca a folder.
"My father authorized the transfers. Adrian directed them. I have the emails, payment records, and meeting notes."
Adrian stared at her.
"You ungrateful child."
Victoria's voice shook, but she held her ground.
"You taught me that loyalty meant protecting the family at any cost. I finally understand that you were protecting yourself."
Rebecca signaled to the officers waiting near the entrance.
They moved toward Adrian.
He looked around the ballroom, searching for someone willing to defend him.
Mr. Alden stepped forward.
For a moment, I thought he would attack.
Instead, he removed a small key from his pocket.
"I have kept this for twenty-five years," he said. "It opens the original archive chamber."
He handed it to me.
"I was wrong to help Adrian. I told myself I was protecting the family, but I was protecting my own position."
"Why should I believe you now?" I asked.
"You shouldn't. Verify everything I say."
It was the first honest thing I had heard from him.
Dante ordered the officers to take Adrian into custody pending the investigation. The trustees agreed to preserve the evidence and suspend all disputed transfers.
But Adrian did not look defeated.
As he passed me, he leaned close enough for only me to hear.
"You have the charter. You have the ledger. You think you've won."
I held his gaze.
"I think the truth is finally being heard."
His smile returned.
"Then ask yourself why your father waited so long to reveal it."
The question struck an old wound.
Before I could respond, Adrian was led away.
Dante approached me.
"Are you all right?"
"I don't know."
He nodded.
"You don't have to decide tonight."
I looked down at the bell in my hands.
The mechanism had recognized me, but it had not given me the answers I needed.
The final recording contained a location for the charter, yet the original document was still missing.
Rebecca examined the screen.
"There's another file."
She opened it.
A map appeared, showing a hidden chamber beneath St. Agnes Church.
Beside the map was a recent photograph of a man standing in the doorway.
Gabriel Moretti.
May you like
Alive.
And behind him stood my mother, holding a gun.
