Chapter 12 - The Woman Dante Could Not Command|

Adrian left the vault without firing a shot.

He had no need to.

The document he carried had unsettled Dante more effectively than a bullet could have.

For the first time since I had met him, the mafia king looked genuinely uncertain.

"That signature could be forged," I said.

"It could."

"Then we verify it."

He stared at the empty doorway.

"Adrian has been planning this for years. He knew about the archive, the succession mechanism, and the will. He may have access to documents we haven't found."

"Then we find them."

Dante looked at me.

"You don't understand how dangerous he is."

"No. I understand exactly how dangerous he is. I have spent my entire adult life being threatened by people who believed I had no choice."

I stepped closer.

"I am not asking you to protect me by making my decisions. I am asking you to help me make them."

Something shifted in his expression.

He lowered his gaze.

"You're right."

The admission was quiet, but it mattered.

We left the terminal through a rear exit and met Rebecca at a secure office. She examined the declaration and immediately identified several irregularities.

"The paper stock is correct," she said. "The signature resembles the original. But the witness stamp belongs to a notary who died three years before this document was supposedly signed."

Dante exhaled.

"So it's fraudulent."

"Almost certainly."

Rebecca continued reviewing the records.

"There's another issue. Adrian has been transferring ownership of the family's legitimate businesses into companies controlled by the Ashford family. If the succession dispute becomes public, he intends to argue that Dante's authority is invalid and that the trustees must appoint a new administrator."

"Victoria's father," I said.

"Exactly."

Dante called his attorney and ordered an emergency review of every transfer.

While they worked, I sat alone in a small conference room and read my father's letter again.

He had wanted me to live beyond the walls of the family.

Yet the truth had brought me straight into the heart of its secrets.

A knock sounded.

Dante stood in the doorway carrying two cups of coffee.

"I didn't know how you take it," he said. "So I brought sugar and cream."

I almost laughed.

The most feared man in New York had no idea how to order coffee for a woman he had employed for two years.

"Black is fine."

He handed me a cup and sat across from me.

For several minutes, we drank in silence.

Then he spoke.

"When I ordered you onto that platform, I wanted to prove that the test was meaningless. I thought the whole ceremony was an insult to my grandfather's memory."

"And instead?"

"Instead, I discovered that I knew almost nothing about my family."

I studied him.

"Does that frighten you?"

"Yes."

His honesty left me speechless.

He set his cup down.

"I also need to apologize for how I've treated you since the ceremony. I gave orders about your movements, your work, and who could speak to you. I told myself it was for your safety. That doesn't make it right."

"No, it doesn't."

"I won't ask you to forgive me."

"Good."

A faint smile crossed his face.

"You're difficult."

"I'm independent. People often confuse the two."

He laughed softly.

It was the first time I had heard him laugh without bitterness.

For a moment, I saw the man he might have been if he had grown up in a different family.

Then Rebecca entered carrying a new report.

"The Ashford family has called a press conference for tomorrow morning," she said. "They're claiming Clara manipulated the succession test and that Dante concealed evidence of her identity."

Dante rose.

"Let them talk."

Rebecca hesitated.

"There's more. Victoria Ashford has requested a private meeting with Clara."

I frowned.

"Why?"

Rebecca placed a photograph on the table.

It showed Victoria standing beside a woman whose face was partially hidden beneath a hat.

My mother.

On the back was a handwritten note.

Meet me alone, or Elena Bennett disappears forever.
