Chapter 16 - The Ceremony of Broken Promises|

Adrian chose the Moretti mansion for the final confrontation.

By the time we returned to New York, the ballroom had been restored. The golden platform stood in the center of the room, polished until it reflected the chandeliers.

A small group of trustees waited beside the stage.

Victoria Ashford, still recovering from her injury, had agreed to testify against her father and Adrian. She stood near Rebecca, pale but determined.

Dante's attorneys had obtained an emergency order preventing the transfer of the family's legitimate businesses until the evidence could be reviewed.

But Adrian still controlled enough people to make the situation dangerous.

He had demanded a public ceremony, claiming that the original succession test must be completed before the trustees could determine who would inherit the estate.

I refused to let him turn my family into another performance.

Yet I agreed to attend because Gabriel was still missing.

Dante walked beside me into the ballroom.

"You don't have to do this," he said.

"I know."

"If anything goes wrong—"

"Then we deal with it together."

He nodded.

There was no command in his voice this time. No attempt to tell me where to stand or what I could risk.

Only trust.

Adrian waited on the platform, dressed in a dark suit. Beside him stood Mr. Alden, the elderly adviser who had betrayed the family.

Alden looked older than he had the day the Black Rose awakened.

Adrian smiled when he saw me.

"Clara. You look more like your father every time I see you."

"Where is he?"

"Safe, for now."

"You have until the end of this ceremony to tell me where."

Adrian spread his hands.

"First, we must settle the inheritance."

He turned toward the trustees.

"The succession mechanism has identified Clara as a blood heir. However, the original will requires the selected heir to enter a formal marriage alliance before the estate can be transferred."

A murmur swept through the room.

Dante stepped forward.

"The marriage condition is being challenged in court."

"Not yet decided," Adrian replied. "Until then, the trustees must follow the will."

He looked directly at me.

"You may choose Dante as your husband, and the family can be united under one name. Or you may refuse, and the estate will pass into temporary administration."

I stared at him.

"You want me to marry Dante so you can control the family through him."

Adrian smiled.

"Marriage is a practical arrangement. You would be protected. Your mother would be safe. Your father would come home."

Dante's expression was cold.

"She will not marry me under threat."

"How romantic," Adrian said. "You sound like Gabriel."

He signaled to Alden.

The old adviser approached the platform and opened a small case. Inside lay the original family seal.

The golden mechanism began to hum.

Adrian extended his hand.

"Clara, take your place."

I stepped onto the platform.

The weights shifted beneath my feet.

I remembered my mother's fishing boat. I remembered the lighthouse, the compass, and the words engraved in the family charter.

The world always tells you where it wants you to stand.

I moved carefully, listening to the mechanism.

The weights aligned.

The platform leveled.

A hidden panel opened.

But instead of the Black Rose, a small brass bell emerged from beneath the gold.

It had no clapper.

Adrian's smile disappeared.

"What have you done?"

I picked up the bell.

"The ceremony is over."

The platform flashed red.

A concealed screen appeared.

GUARDIANSHIP CHALLENGED. ORIGINAL CHARTER REQUIRED.

Adrian lunged toward me.

Dante intercepted him.

The ballroom erupted into chaos.

May you like

And from the speakers came Gabriel's voice.

"Adrian, if you are hearing this, the truth has finally caught up with you."
