Chapter 2 - THE SISTER’s REVELATION

Emma was the kindest person I had ever known. She remembered everyone’s birthdays, rescued stray animals, and made every place we lived feel warm. When our son Oliver was born, I thought we were beginning the happiest chapter of our lives. Instead, the delivery nearly took her from us. She came home weak, exhausted, and barely able to sit up without help. So when my mother, Vivian, offered to stay for a few weeks, I accepted because I truly believed she wanted to help. I was wrong. To everyone else, Vivian looked like the perfect grandmother. Her social media was full of smiling photos and emotional posts about family, sacrifice, and love. Behind closed doors, she chipped away at Emma with criticism, quiet insults, meals Emma was not supposed to eat, and baby monitors that mysteriously stopped working whenever I was gone. What Vivian never understood was that I trusted evidence more than excuses. By the time she disabled the nursery camera that morning, she had already stepped into a trap she did not know existed. Every instinct told me to rush home and pull my mother away from my wife. But Emma and Oliver needed protection, not chaos. If I stormed in without proof, Vivian would do what she had always done—turn herself into the victim. So I stayed in the car, saved the recording, and called my older sister, Natalie. She answered cheerfully. I did not explain. I simply sent her three minutes of footage and waited while she watched. When the video ended, I heard her crying. Then she whispered the words that changed everything: “She used to do this to me too.”
