Chapter 1 - THE CAMERA THAT EXPOSED MY MOTHER

At exactly 9:15 that morning, my phone vibrated while I sat in my car three blocks from home. The nursery camera had offline again. It had happened too many times to feel like an accident, so the night before, I had installed a second hidden camera with its own cellular signal. I expected to catch my mother unplugging the router. Instead, I saw something that made my whole body go cold. My wife, Emma, was still recovering from a dangerous postpartum complication. Her doctors had ordered bed rest, no lifting, no bending, and as little stress as possible. But on my screen, she was crying in pain, trembling beside the bed while broken glass and crushed medication covered the floor around her. Then my mother lifted our crying newborn son and held him just out of Emma’s reach. “Oliver is crying because his mother is weak and useless,” she said. “Get down and clean every piece. Only then will I let you hold him.” I did not scream. I did not race straight into the house. My name is Daniel Mercer, and my career as an operations director had taught me that panic only makes a crisis worse. What I was watching was not a family argument. It was my mother using my wife and newborn son as weapons inside my own home.
