Chapter 5 - The Twins Opened Their Eyes

Emma opened her eyes fully on the twelfth day.
Noah followed the next morning.
Tiny milestones became enormous. Half an ounce gained. Ten fewer minutes on oxygen. A stronger cry. The first time Lena held both babies skin-to-skin, she sobbed so hard the NICU nurse cried too. Alex stood outside the glass until Lena waved him in.
“Come meet the people you caught.”
He approached slowly.
Emma’s hand wrapped around his finger.
Alex froze.
“She likes you.”
“She has terrible judgment.”
“Runs in the family.”
They both stopped.
Then laughed.
The past remained between them but had stopped behaving like a wall. More like a scar—visible, sometimes painful, not always defining movement.
Victor sent Lena a letter from jail.
She almost burned it.
Detective Santos asked to copy before she decided.
The letter began:
I never meant for them to suffer.
Lena laughed bitterly.
He wrote that debts destroyed his judgment. He planned to enter after Lena lost consciousness, stage equipment malfunction, and ensure emergency services found her “too late.” He insisted he loved the twins.
Lena stopped reading.
There are statements so selfish they make language itself feel dirty.
He wanted forgiveness eventually.
She never finished.
Alex did not ask what letter said.
“Why not?”
“Because if you want me to know, you’ll tell me.”
Another difference between him and Victor.

Victor always believed access to Lena was included in love.
Alex waited at doors.
