Chapter 13 - Margaret House Opened Its Hundredth Case

Margaret House’s hundredth resident was a thirty-eight-year-old restaurant owner whose husband had secretly borrowed against her business. She arrived carrying two suitcases and a folder of loan papers.

Evelyn met her accidentally during a site visit.

The woman recognized her.

“You’re the woman from the gala.”

Evelyn sighed.

“Unfortunately.”

“You didn’t scream.”

“No.”

“I would’ve.”

“I wanted to.”

The woman smiled.

“I saw you standing there while everyone expected you to lose it. It made me realize sometimes people provoke you because they need your reaction.”

Evelyn stopped.

Carter and Elliot had done exactly that.

The woman continued. “So when my husband shoved papers at me and told me I was crazy for asking questions, I didn’t sign.”

Evelyn’s eyes filled.

“Good.”

“I came here instead.”

That night Evelyn told Julian.

“Maybe the gala mattered.”

“It did.”

“I hated that it became entertainment.”

“Both can be true.”

Always.

Evelyn expanded Margaret House into a national legal-support network.

Bella’s organization became one training partner.

Carter’s nonprofit became another after strict conflict review.

People who once hurt her became useful without becoming central.

That felt like freedom.
