Chapter 12 - Victoria Returned to New York

Victoria came back permanently after four years in London. Her art foundation had recovered under new governance, and she accepted a seat—not on the Blackwood board—but on the independent family archive commission.
Evelyn invited her to dinner.
Trust had rebuilt slowly.
Victoria said, “I used to envy you.”
“I knew.”
“No. I envied that everyone treated you like the real Blackwood.”
Evelyn looked surprised.
“You were.”
“Not in the same way.”
Victoria spent childhood as the spare branch. Evelyn was Charles’s daughter, Margaret’s chosen successor.
“When Carter offered me influence, I told myself I was correcting an imbalance.”
“You were taking advantage of me.”
“Yes.”
“I appreciate accurate nouns.”
Victoria smiled.
They talked until midnight.
No absolution.
Understanding.
The next year Victoria married a woman named Elise Martin, a museum conservator.
Evelyn served as maid of honor.
Caroline cried through the entire ceremony.
The Blackwood family changed.
