Chapter 19 - THE WOMAN CLAIRE CHOSE|

Vanessa met me at a quiet hotel.

She looked exhausted.

Her father had been arrested. Her family accounts were frozen. The society pages that once celebrated her engagement were now reporting the investigation.

She placed a document on the table.

"This is the original hospital statement."

I read it.

It showed that Claire had refused the second medication order.

The refusal had been witnessed by a nurse.

Grace Miller.

But there was another signature.

Margaret Cole.

I looked at Vanessa.

"She knew Claire refused?"

"Yes."

"Then why did she approve the change?"

Vanessa swallowed.

"Because my father threatened to expose the Moretti organization and have you arrested."

I stared at her.

"She thought she was protecting me?"

"That's what she told him."

I lowered the document.

"Did Claire know?"

Vanessa nodded.

"She knew Margaret was frightened. She also knew your mother was being manipulated."

I said nothing.

Vanessa continued.

"Your wife left a final instruction with the hospital social worker. She wanted Grace to stay close to Noah if anything happened."

I looked at her.

"Why Grace?"

"Because Claire trusted her."

Vanessa handed me a final envelope.

Inside was a short note.

If my son grows up without me, I want him surrounded by people who choose him freely. Grace is one of those people.

I sat down.

For three years, I had believed Grace entered my life by coincidence.

But Claire had known her.

She had recognized something in her.

A kindness that couldn't be purchased or demanded.

I looked at Vanessa.

"Why are you giving me this?"

"Because I owe the truth to somebody."

"That won't erase what you did."

"I know."

She stood.

"I struck Grace because I was jealous of a little boy's love. I wanted a family that would make me important. I didn't understand that Noah already had a family."

I watched her walk toward the door.

Before leaving, she turned.

"Don't make the same mistake I did, Luca."

"What mistake?"

"Thinking that love is something you can control."

That evening, I returned home.

Grace was in the kitchen.

Noah was sitting on the counter, carefully arranging strawberries on a plate.

When he saw me, he shouted.

"Daddy! We made your favorite!"

I smiled.

"What's that?"

"Strawberries!"

Grace laughed.

"He insisted."

I took the letter from my pocket.

"Claire left you something."

Grace looked surprised.

I gave her the note.

She read it slowly.

Then she pressed it against her chest.

"I never wanted to take her place."

"You never did."

I reached for her hand.

"She chose you because she knew what kind of person you were."

Grace looked into my eyes.

"Then I want to choose this family too."

I kissed her.

Noah clapped.

"Again!"

We laughed.

For a moment, everything was perfect.

Then the doorbell rang.

Marco entered carrying a small package.

It was addressed to Noah.

Inside was a photograph of Claire holding him as a newborn.

On the back, somebody had written:

She deserved to live.

There was no signature.

No threat.

Only those four words.

I stared at the photograph.

Then I looked at Marco.

"Who sent it?"

He shook his head.

"We don't know."

I placed the picture beside Claire's letter.

And for the first time, I understood that closure didn't mean forgetting.

It meant refusing to let the past decide what happened next.

May you like

The next morning, I made a decision that would change our family forever.

I asked Grace to marry me.
