Chapter 1 - THE BRUISES HE WAS NEVER SUPPOSED TO SEEThe dining room of the Moretti mansion had hosted some of the most powerful men in New York. Politicians, businessmen, judges, and people whose names never appeared in newspapers had sat beneath its enormous crystal chandelier.

Yet on that Thursday evening, Dominic Moretti noticed something nobody else seemed willing to see.

His housemaid was afraid.

Elena Brooks stood beside the dining table, holding a silver tray with both hands. At twenty-six, she was younger than most of the employees in the mansion, but she had already learned how to move quietly, speak politely, and avoid attracting attention.

Tonight, however, she had made one mistake.

The makeup beneath her left eye had begun to fade.

Dominic lowered his wineglass.

"Elena."

She immediately straightened.

"Yes, Mr. Moretti?"

"Come here."

She approached carefully.

Dominic was thirty-eight, broad-shouldered, and known throughout the East Coast for his ruthless business instincts. Men twice his size lowered their voices when he entered a room.

But his attention remained fixed on the faint purple mark beneath her eye.

"Who did that to your face?"

The tray trembled.

"I fell, sir."

"Where?"

"On the stairs."

"Interesting."

He stood.

"Because I walked down those stairs this morning. The carpet is perfectly flat."

Elena looked at the floor.

Dominic noticed the way her right hand moved toward her left shoulder, protecting it instinctively.

"Put the tray down."

"Sir, dinner—"

"Can wait."

She obeyed.

"Show me your arm."

Her expression changed.

"Please, Mr. Moretti. It's nothing."

"Then showing me won't be a problem."

For several seconds, she remained motionless. Finally, she pulled back her sleeve.

Dark fingerprints surrounded her upper arm.

Dominic's jaw tightened.

Someone had grabbed her hard enough to leave visible marks.

"Who?"

"I can't tell you."

"Can't or won't?"

Elena swallowed.

Before she could answer, a familiar voice came from the doorway.

"Everything all right, boss?"

Victor Hail stood there in his tailored navy suit. At forty-five, he had served as Dominic's security coordinator for eight years. He controlled the mansion's cameras, managed the guards, and knew nearly every secret movement within the property.

Dominic turned slightly.

"Why are you here?"

"Checking on the staff. I heard some noise."

Victor glanced at Elena.

"She's been clumsy lately. Dropped dishes yesterday. Perhaps she injured herself."

Elena's face lost its color.

Dominic saw it.

"Victor, leave."

Victor raised an eyebrow.

"Of course."

He walked away, but his expression had changed.

Dominic waited until the footsteps disappeared.

"Sit down, Elena."

"I need this job."

"Nobody is firing you."

"I have a brother."

"I didn't ask about your family."

Her eyes filled with tears.

"His name is Noah. He's seventeen. Our parents are gone, and I'm the only person he can depend on."

Dominic pulled out a chair.

"Whoever hurt you knows that."

Elena looked at him sharply.

"How did you know?"

"Because you aren't afraid of being hurt again. You're afraid of what happens if you speak."

Her phone vibrated.

She looked at the screen.

A message appeared.

KEEP YOUR MOUTH SHUT. YOUR BROTHER'S SAFETY DEPENDS ON IT.

A photograph followed.

Noah was walking outside his school in Queens.

Dominic's expression hardened.

"Who sent that?"

Elena covered her mouth.

"Please. You don't understand."

"Then explain."

"You can't fix everything because you're powerful."

The words surprised him.

For a moment, Dominic said nothing.

Then he answered quietly.

"You're right. But I can start by listening."

Elena described the previous three weeks. She told him about the unexplained deliveries, the suspicious invoices, and Maria Santos, a laundry worker who had disappeared after accusing Victor of stealing money.

She also confessed that she had overheard Victor discussing a financial transfer in Dominic's private study.

"Did he see you?"

"Yes."

"What happened?"

"He grabbed me. He told me that nobody would believe a maid over a man who had protected your family for eight years."

Dominic looked toward the doorway.

"He was wrong."

His phone rang.

It was Michael Reeves, his attorney.

"Dominic, we have a serious problem. Nearly two million dollars have disappeared through a consulting company connected to Raymond Cross."

Dominic went still.

Raymond Cross had been responsible for the betrayal that nearly destroyed his father twelve years earlier.

"There's something else," Michael continued. "The company authorized a transfer scheduled for tomorrow night."

"Who approved it?"

A pause.

"Someone using your uncle Anthony's credentials."

Dominic stared at Elena.

Before he could respond, her phone vibrated again.

This time, the photograph showed Noah standing outside his school.

The message contained only five words.

WE'RE COMING TO COLLECT HIM.

Elena suddenly stood.

"Noah!"

She called her brother.

The connection opened after two rings.

"Elena?" Noah whispered.

"Where are you?"

"Outside school. There's a man here. He says you sent him."

"Don't get into his car!"

A car door slammed.

A strange male voice spoke in the background.

Then the call ended.

Elena nearly collapsed.

Dominic caught her before she hit the floor.

"Get my car ready," he ordered.

His head of security answered over the radio.

"Yes, sir."

But before Dominic could move, a security alert appeared on his phone.

UNAUTHORIZED ACCESS: PRIVATE STUDY.

The credentials belonged to Victor Hail.

Dominic looked toward the staircase.

Then Elena grabbed his sleeve.

"There's something else."

"What?"

She was trembling.

"Victor hid something behind the wooden panel beneath your father's fireplace."

Dominic stopped.

Only three people had known that compartment existed.

His father.

His uncle.

And Dominic himself.

He looked at Elena.

"What exactly did you see?"

"A black envelope."

At that moment, the study door opened.

Anthony Moretti stood inside.

Behind him was Victor Hail.

May you like

His uncle looked at the envelope in Dominic's hand and slowly closed the door.

"You weren't supposed to find that," Anthony whispered.
