Chapter 7 - THE MOTHER WHO NEVER STOPPED WAITINGThe clinic stood behind a row of abandoned commercial buildings, surrounded by overgrown trees and a rusted iron fence.

Dominic arrived with Michael and a small team of independent security officers. Elena remained in the vehicle until the entrance had been checked.
The building was silent.
A faded sign indicated that it had once been a private rehabilitation center. Its windows were covered, and the reception area smelled of dust and disinfectant.
A nurse appeared from a side corridor.
"Are you Dominic Moretti?"
"Yes."
She looked nervous.
"Your mother left something for you."
She handed him a sealed envelope.
Dominic recognized the handwriting immediately.
It was Isabella's.
He opened it carefully.
My beautiful boy, if you're reading this, it means I failed to come home again. Please don't believe that I abandoned you. I have spent every day hoping that one day I would be able to explain.
His vision blurred.
Elena stood nearby, giving him privacy.
The letter continued.
Your father discovered that Anthony had been working with Raymond Cross. He planned to expose them, but they found out first. After his death, I learned that the people responsible were watching you. I left because they threatened to kill you if I stayed.
Dominic read the final sentence twice.
I am sorry I let you grow up believing I was gone.
He folded the letter.
"Where is she?"
The nurse looked toward the back entrance.
"She was here earlier. But two men arrived and took her away."
Dominic's expression hardened.
"When?"
"About twenty minutes ago."
"Did she leave willingly?"
The nurse shook her head.
"One of the men showed her a photograph. She became frightened and went with them."
"What photograph?"
The nurse hesitated.
"A young woman. I think her name was Elena."
Dominic turned.
Elena looked stunned.
Someone had used her photograph to control Isabella.
The nurse continued.
"Your mother said something before leaving. She asked me to tell you that the truth was hidden in the old chapel."
Michael searched the building records.
There was a small chapel several miles away, part of an estate that had once belonged to the Moretti family.
Dominic remembered visiting it as a child.
His father had taken him there every Sunday.
They drove there immediately.
Inside, the chapel was dusty and nearly empty. Sunlight entered through colored glass, illuminating rows of wooden benches.
Elena noticed a loose panel behind the altar.
"Mr. Moretti."
Dominic approached.
Behind the panel was a metal box.
Inside were old photographs, a handwritten diary, and a small cassette recorder.
Michael found an adapter and transferred the recording.
A woman's voice filled the chapel.
Isabella.
"Anthony, I know what you did. I know about the payments to Raymond. I know you were present the night my husband died."
Another voice answered.
Anthony.
"You have no idea what you're accusing me of."
"Then why did you destroy the hospital records?"
A pause.
"Because your husband was already dead. And I wasn't going to let you destroy the family over a tragedy."
Isabella's voice broke.
"You killed him."
The recording ended.
Dominic stood motionless.
His father hadn't died from an ordinary accident.
He had been murdered.
Michael carefully placed the recorder into an evidence bag.
"That could change everything."
Dominic stared at the empty altar.
For twelve years, he had blamed himself for not protecting his mother.
Now he understood that she had been trying to protect him.
Elena stepped closer.
"She loves you."
He looked at her.
"How can you know?"
"Because she kept your photograph."
Dominic swallowed.
Then his phone rang.
A private number.
He answered.
A familiar voice spoke.
"Dominic, sweetheart."
His mother.
"Where are you?"
"Don't come looking for me."
"Mom, please—"
"Listen carefully. Anthony knows about the recording. And he knows you have it."
A sharp sound interrupted her.
Then she whispered:
May you like
"There's something else. Your father didn't leave you the business. He left you the truth."
The connection went dead.
