Chapter 9 - THE ALLY WHO SOLD THEM OUTDominic read his father's letter three times.

The name appeared near the bottom.

Dr. Samuel Whitmore.

He had been the Moretti family's physician for almost twenty years. He had treated Dominic's childhood injuries, attended his father's final hours, and signed the medical documents confirming Isabella's supposed death.

Dominic remembered him as a quiet man who rarely involved himself in family matters.

Now his name appeared beside Anthony's.

"Find him," Dominic ordered.

Michael searched public records.

Samuel had retired from medicine six years earlier and moved to a property in Connecticut. His medical license had been suspended after a financial investigation, but the case had mysteriously disappeared.

The suspension had occurred only months after Maria left the accounting firm.

Dominic recognized the pattern.

People who discovered something were either discredited, threatened, or removed.

He returned to the mansion.

Elena was waiting in the kitchen.

Noah sat nearby doing homework.

"Did you find something?" she asked.

"An old doctor."

Dominic explained the letter.

Elena frowned.

"Maria mentioned him."

"When?"

"Before she disappeared. She said someone had been signing medical supply invoices for equipment that never reached the hospital."

Dominic's eyes narrowed.

"Did she say why?"

"She believed the money was being used to pay people who helped keep Isabella's medical records hidden."

Michael joined them.

"We've located Whitmore's current address. But there is a complication."

"What?"

"He's been dead for four years."

Dominic stared at him.

"Prove it."

Michael produced a death certificate.

The document claimed Samuel had died in a private care facility. But there was no public funeral notice, no family obituary, and no verified burial record.

Elena examined the photograph attached to an old medical identification card.

"That's not the same man."

Michael looked at her.

"What?"

"The doctor in the photograph is younger. But the man I saw visiting Victor's office last month looked much older."

Dominic leaned closer.

"You're certain?"

"Yes. He had a scar near his left ear."

Michael searched archived photographs.

Within minutes, he found an image of Samuel Whitmore taken at a medical conference three years earlier.

The scar was visible.

The doctor was alive.

And his supposed death had been fabricated.

Dominic arranged a meeting through an intermediary.

The following evening, Samuel agreed to speak at a restaurant in Connecticut.

Dominic went with Michael. Elena stayed behind with Noah.

Samuel arrived wearing a dark coat and carrying a leather briefcase.

He looked older than Dominic remembered.

"You've grown into your father," the doctor said.

"Don't use his name."

Samuel sat.

Dominic placed the letter on the table.

"Tell me what happened."

The doctor looked at it and closed his eyes.

"Your father discovered that Anthony had been moving money through Raymond Cross's companies. He planned to report everything."

"And you helped them?"

"I helped Isabella escape."

Dominic's expression changed.

"What?"

Samuel explained that Isabella had survived the night her husband died. She had been hospitalized under a false identity after an attempt on her life.

Anthony had threatened to kill Dominic if she returned.

Samuel had arranged for her to be moved between private facilities, creating false medical records to conceal her location.

"Why did you tell everyone she was dead?"

"Because Anthony had access to the hospitals. He was paying people to find her."

Dominic leaned forward.

"Where is she now?"

Samuel opened his briefcase.

Inside was a photograph of Isabella entering a small apartment building.

"She has been living under another name."

"Why didn't she contact me?"

"She tried. Every attempt was intercepted."

Dominic's voice became cold.

"Who intercepted her?"

Samuel looked toward the window.

"Victor. But he wasn't acting alone."

"Who else?"

The doctor swallowed.

"Your uncle had help from someone inside your legal team."

Dominic's phone vibrated.

A message from Elena.

THE HOUSE IS NOT SAFE. SOMEONE HAS TAKEN NOAH.

A second message appeared.

A photograph showed Noah's empty bedroom.

And beneath it was a handwritten note.

COME ALONE, DOMINIC. OR THE BOY DISAPPEARS FOREVER.
