Chapter 17 - THE LAST PROMISE|

Anthony was arrested.
But his confession was only the beginning.
The authorities recovered financial records linking the Hart organization to illegal contracts and medical fraud.
Dr. Bell agreed to provide testimony.
Margaret surrendered her documents.
Vanessa offered to testify against her father.
For the first time in years, the truth was moving toward daylight.
But I had one more thing to do.
I took Claire's letter to the cemetery.
It was raining lightly.
I stood beside her grave for a long time.
"I'm sorry," I whispered.
I told her about Noah.
About Grace.
About the elephant.
About the recordings.
Then I told her something I had never said aloud.
"I think I'm falling in love again."
The words felt like betrayal.
But when I looked at her photograph, I remembered her final note.
Don't punish either of them because I had to leave first.
I placed the letter beneath the flowers.
Then I heard footsteps behind me.
Grace stood beneath a black umbrella.
"I didn't want you to be alone."
I looked at her.
"How did you know I was here?"
"Noah told me you were going to visit Mommy Claire."
I smiled sadly.
"He understands more than we think."
Grace stepped closer.
"He's been asking when you'll come home."
I looked at her.
"Are you planning to stay?"
She hesitated.
"I don't know what you want."
"I want you to stop thinking you have to earn your place here."
Her eyes filled.
"Luca, I'm not Claire."
"I know."
"I'm not trying to replace her."
"I know that too."
I took her hand.
"I don't want you to replace anybody. I want to know whether there's a chance we could build something of our own."
Grace looked down.
For a moment, I thought she would refuse.
Then she whispered:
"I've been hoping you'd ask."
I kissed her forehead.
It was gentle.
Careful.
A beginning rather than a promise.
When we returned home, Noah was waiting by the entrance.
He ran toward us.
"Mommy Grace!"
Grace lifted him.
"Hello, sweetheart."
Noah looked at me.
"Are you happy now, Daddy?"
I smiled.
"Getting there, buddy."
He hugged both of us.
For the first time, the mansion felt like a home.
But that happiness lasted only until Marco arrived.
He was holding a sealed envelope.
"Boss, we received this from the hospital archives."
"What is it?"
He looked at Grace.
"It's a letter Claire wrote shortly before she died."
I opened it.
The first line read:
If Noah is ever in danger again, the person responsible may not be the one you think.
May you like
And beneath it was a name.
Margaret Cole.
