Chapter 9 - Truth in the LightThe ballroom went completely silent. Cameras flashed rapidly as reporters scrambled to get a shot of the supposedly dying billionaire.

Elena’s glass of champagne slipped from her hand, shattering on the marble floor. Marcus froze at the podium, his face draining of all color as if he had seen a ghost.

“Ricardo?” Elena gasped, her voice cracking. “You’re… you’re supposed to be—”

“In the ICU?” Ricardo’s deep voice echoed across the quiet hall as he walked steadily up the center aisle toward the stage. “Or perhaps six feet under, Elena?”

He stepped onto the stage, taking the microphone directly out of Marcus’s paralyzed hand.

“Ladies and gentlemen,” Ricardo announced calmly to the audience. “I apologize for the confusion. As you can see, my heart is in perfect condition.”

He gestured toward the giant screens behind him.

Instead of corporate presentation slides, the screens displayed high-definition security camera footage from Ricardo’s coat closet crack—showing Marcus and Elena drinking champagne, laughing, and discussing the offshore bank transfers.

Beside the video, a certified toxicology report appeared from the state crime lab, detailing the lethal cardiac toxin found in Elena’s vanity drawer.

The audience erupted into loud gasps and shocked whispers. Journalists began shouting questions at once.

“Marcus Vance and my wife have spent the last six months stealing forty million dollars from this company,” Ricardo stated with absolute authority into the microphone. “And for the last three weeks, they have been attempting to slowly murder me.”

Marcus panicked, trying to bolt toward the side exit, but two heavy oak doors opened, and four armed federal agents stepped inside, blocking his path.

“Marcus Vance! Elena Santoro!” the lead federal agent announced, stepping onto the stage with handcuffs. “You are under arrest for attempted murder, wire fraud, and grand larceny.”

Elena burst into hysterical tears, screaming at Marcus as the officers clamped the cold steel cuffs around her wrists. “You said this was foolproof! You ruined my life!”

Marcus said nothing, his head hung low in utter disgrace as they were marched past the crowd of shocked elite out of the ballroom.
