Chapter 2 - Whispers in the ClosetFor nearly twenty minutes, Ricardo stood frozen in the claustrophobic darkness of the hallway closet, listening to the two people he trusted most plot his utter ruin.

Marcus was pouring more champagne. Through the crack in the door, Ricardo could see Marcus’s silhouette—tailored suit, dark slicked-back hair, leaning casually against the marble bar.
“The offshore transfers will complete on Friday,” Marcus said smoothly. “Once the fraud investigation hits the press, the board will panic. They’ll force Ricardo out. By Monday, I’ll step in as temporary CEO, buy out his liquidated shares for pennies on the dollar, and hand you your settlement.”
Elena giggled, a sound that made Ricardo’s blood run cold. “And what about his health? Are you sure the dosage in his night tea won't trace back to us?”
Marcus smirked. “It’s a slow-acting compound. It mimics stress-induced cardiovascular failure. Even if an autopsy is ordered, it looks like a heart attack brought on by the financial crisis. Nobody will question it.”
Inside the closet, Marta’s grip on Ricardo’s coat trembled violently. Ricardo felt a surge of rage so pure it nearly blinded him, but he forced his breath to stay slow and quiet.
Elena was poisoning him. Every evening before he went to bed, she had brought him a mug of chamomile tea with a sweet, affectionate kiss. It wasn't love; it was a slow execution.
“We should go upstairs,” Elena murmured softly, taking Marcus by the hand.
“Wait until eleven,” Marcus replied. “The security guards rotate shifts then.”
As their footsteps faded down the grand corridor toward the guest wing, Marta finally slowly released her hand from Ricardo’s mouth. She slumped against the wooden closet wall, catching her breath.
“Don Ricardo… I’m so sorry,” she whispered, tears slipping down her cheeks. “I found the vial in her vanity yesterday while cleaning. I didn't know what to do… if I told you on the phone, they would have known.”

Ricardo looked down at the young maid. Marta had worked for his household for years, always quiet, efficient, and observant. While his wife was planning his murder, this young woman had risked her life to stand between him and destruction.
“You saved my life, Marta,” Ricardo whispered, his voice steadying into a calm, icy focus. “Now, we are going to make them pay for every single word they just said.”
