Chapter 8 - The Exposure of the HalesThe news of the Hale family's arrest hit the front pages of every newspaper in the state. Hale Dynasty Collapses: Federal Embezzlement and Local Corruption Uncovered.

Sheriff Thomas was arrested within hours of the mansion raid, charged with receiving bribes and obstructing justice. The local police department was placed under state supervision, its corrupt deputies stripped of their authority.
The preliminary hearing was held at the federal courthouse in Seattle, far away from the Hales’ local sphere of influence.
I sat in the front row of the gallery, wearing my best dark suit, my silver hair styled neatly. Claire sat beside me, her hand holding mine. She was no longer trembling. The bruises on her ribs were healing, but the strength in her eyes was permanent.
Beckett and his father, Charles Hale, sat at the defense table, surrounded by a team of high-priced corporate lawyers. But even their expensive attorneys looked defeated. The mountain of financial evidence, combined with the audio recordings of Beckett's admissions, left no room for defense.
The federal prosecutor stood before the judge, displaying the photos of Claire's bruises and playing the audio of Beckett’s threats.
"The defendants, Beckett and Charles Hale, did not just steal twelve million dollars of public money," the prosecutor said, his voice echoing through the silent courtroom. "They used their local power to terrorize and silence anyone who stood in their way. Beckett Hale abused his wife, threw her into a blizzard barefoot, and threatened to have her committed to a psychiatric facility to protect his family's illegal empire."
The judge looked down at Beckett with absolute disgust. "Based on the evidence presented, I am denying bail for both defendants. This case will proceed to trial immediately under federal conspiracy laws."
