Chapter 4 - The Unraveling ThreadThe files Richard’s team sent were a goldmine of corporate greed and systemic corruption. For three hours, I sat at my kitchen table, printing out bank statements, shell company registrations, and local government contracts.

Beckett Hale was not just a abusive husband; he was the financial brain behind Hale Enterprises’ illegal operations. For years, the family had been securing lucrative municipal development contracts by bribing local officials, including the county commissioner and Sheriff Thomas.
But that was just the beginning.
According to the forensic audit, Beckett had been systematically siphoning funds from the city’s public infrastructure budget into a network of offshore accounts in the Cayman Islands. He had stolen over twelve million dollars of public money, using a local charity foundation—the very same foundation where he publicly handed out checks to the needy—as a laundering front.
"He's siphoning the money through a dummy construction firm," I muttered to myself, tracing the transaction numbers with my pen. "Every time the city pays for a road repair, thirty percent of the funds are routed to an offshore account registered under Beckett's personal LLC."
This was the leverage I needed. A domestic assault charge could be dismissed or minimized by a corrupt local judge, but federal financial fraud and embezzlement of public funds was a different beast entirely. Once the federal authorities got involved, the Hale family’s local protection would vanish like mist in the morning sun.
I walked into the bedroom where Claire was sitting up in bed, sipping a warm cup of herbal tea. The color was returning to her cheeks, but her eyes were still haunted.
"Claire," I said, sitting beside her. "I need you to tell me about Beckett's home office. Is there a safe?"
She nodded, her fingers tightening around her mug. "Yes. It’s behind the painting in his study. He keeps a black leather ledger in there. I saw him locking it away last week. He told me if I ever touched it, he would make sure I never saw the light of day again."
"Do you know the combination?"
"No," she whispered. "But he always uses a keycard that he keeps on his keychain. And he has a secondary backup file on an encrypted flash drive that he keeps in his desk drawer."
"I can get past the safe," I said, a cold smile touching my lips. "But I need to get inside the house first."

"Margaret, you can't go there," Claire panicked, grabbing my hand. "The estate is heavily guarded. There are cameras everywhere."
"I built my career on entering places I wasn't supposed to be, sweetheart," I said, squeezing her hand. "Beckett thinks I’m a fragile old widow. He won't be expecting me to pay a visit while he's busy 'searching' for his missing wife."
