The Midnight Frost / Chapter 10 / 10

Chapter 10 - Spring WhispersOne year later.

The small house off the northern ridge was surrounded by green grass and blooming wildflowers. The old pine trees rustled in the warm spring breeze, carrying the sweet scent of new beginnings.

I sat on my front porch, a cup of chamomile tea in my hand, watching Claire plant a bed of red roses near the garden gate. She wore a simple yellow sundress, her face glowing in the warm sunlight.

The old station wagon was parked in the driveway, its keys resting on the kitchen counter beside a newly baked cherry pie.

For twenty-eight years, I had been Margaret Vale, the quiet widow who baked pies for church fundraisers. But I was no longer hiding behind that mask. I had reclaimed my identity, my strength, and my daughter's future.

My phone buzzed on the table beside me. It was a message from Richard Vance, wishing us a happy spring.

I smiled, putting the phone down and taking a slow sip of my tea. The winter storm had passed, leaving behind a clear, beautiful horizon. We had walked through the frost, we had faced the monsters of our past, and we had come out stronger on the other side.

As Claire looked up and waved at me from the garden, her smile bright and free, I knew that our family had finally found its true home. The cold was gone, and spring had finally arrived.
