Chapter 9 - A New GenerationTwo years later.

The Mercer Foundation had grown into one of the most respected non-profit organizations in the country, expanding its protective network across four states.
I sat in the front row of the University of Connecticut’s grand auditorium, wearing a sharp burgundy silk dress, smiling brightly.
Beside me sat David Vance, who had successfully led Mercer Capital into a new era of absolute ethical integrity, turning it into one of the top financial management firms in New England.
On the main stage, the university dean stepped up to the podium.
“And now,” the dean announced, his voice booming over the speakers, “presenting the annual Mercer Integrity Award for Corporate Ethics... to Miss Maya Lin!”
A brilliant twenty-four-year-old woman walked up the stage steps, her face radiant with joy as she accepted the award. Maya was a former scholarship recipient funded by the Mercer Foundation—a young woman who had overcome severe poverty to graduate at the top of her class in business law.
The audience erupted into thunderous applause.
Maya stepped up to the microphone, looking directly at me sitting in the front row.
“Thank you,” Maya spoke, her voice clear, confident, and filled with deep warmth. “When I was eighteen, I believed that the business world was driven entirely by ruthlessness and greed. But Mrs. Eleanor Mercer taught me that true strength lies in protecting those who cannot protect themselves.”
She smiled through tears of gratitude.
“Mrs. Mercer showed us that wealth is not a weapon to lord over others—it is a shield to defend human dignity. Thank you, Eleanor, for giving us a future.”
I stood up, clapping proudly, tears of deep, fulfilling joy glistening in my eyes.

Beside me, David smiled warmly, leaning over to gently squeeze my hand. “You built something truly indestructible, Eleanor.”
“We built a legacy, David,” I corrected gently. “One that blood can never corrupt.”
