THE MERCER TRUST / Chapter 3 / 10

Chapter 3 - The Eviction NoticeVanessa let out a sharp, hysterical scream. “Evicted?! You can’t evict us! We own this house! Ethan’s name is on the front gate!”

“Ethan’s name was listed as a temporary resident guest under a conditional trust tenancy agreement,” Martin corrected with razor-sharp precision. “An agreement that required him to provide a safe, respectful environment for the primary trustee.”

Martin turned his head, signaling toward the third sedan.

The rear door opened.

I stepped out onto the gravel driveway. I wore a tailored navy wool coat, dark trousers, and a pearl necklace. The white surgical bandage rested neatly above my left eye, contrasting sharply against my silver hair. I carried myself with the quiet, unyielding authority my late husband had loved so deeply.

Ethan’s jaw dropped. He stared at me as if he were looking at a complete stranger.

“Mom...?” Ethan stammered, taking a hesitant step forward. “What... what is this dress? What are you doing with Martin?”

I walked up the stone steps, my heels clicking firmly against the granite. I stopped beside Martin, looking my son dead in the eye.

“I lived in your guest house for three years, Ethan,” I said softly. “I wanted to see if my son had any room in his heart for a mother who had nothing to give him but love.”

Ethan swallowed hard, his face turning a sickly shade of grey. “Mom, listen to me... last night was a misunderstanding! I was stressed! I didn't mean to push you!”

“You shoved me through a glass door, Ethan,” I replied, my voice steady, cold, and entirely devoid of anger. “And your wife called me broke and useless while I bled on your terrace.”

Vanessa stepped forward, her face contorted in frantic desperation. “Eleanor! Please! I was joking! We love having you here! We can fix the door! We can move you into the main house!”

“You have two hours to pack your personal clothing,” Martin Hale interrupted sternly, stepping between Vanessa and me. “All jewelry, art, and vehicles purchased using Mercer Trust corporate credit lines over the last thirty-six months have been impounded for forensic audit.”

Two private tow trucks pulled through the front gates, backing up toward Ethan’s sports car and Vanessa’s luxury SUV.

“No! Stop them!” Ethan screamed, rushing toward the tow truck drivers. “You can’t take my car! That’s my car!”

Marcus, the head of security, stepped smoothly into Ethan’s path, his massive frame blocking him completely. “Touch the driver, Mr. Mercer, and the deputies will place you under arrest for obstruction.”

Ethan turned back to me, tears of rage and terror streaming down his face. “Mom! Please! You’re destroying my life! My firm has a payroll meeting at noon! If those accounts are frozen, I’m ruined!”

I looked at him—the boy I had raised, the boy I had protected—and saw only the hollow greed that had consumed his soul.

“You destroyed your own life, Ethan,” I said quietly, turning my back on him as I walked toward the front doors of the mansion that was now mine again. “I’m just enforcing the trust.”
