Chapter 5 - The Fall of VanessaWhile Ethan faced federal auditors in Hartford, Vanessa was experiencing her own public reckoning in Greenwich.

Deprived of access to Ethan’s bank accounts, she spent the afternoon sitting in the lobby of the Greenwich Country Club, trying frantically to call her wealthy socialite friends to borrow money for her legal defense.
However, news of the Mercer Trust lockdown had spread through Connecticut’s elite circles like wildfire.
Every single woman who had laughed at Vanessa’s stories about her “broke mother-in-law” now knew the truth: that Eleanor Mercer was a multi-millionaire trustee, and that Ethan and Vanessa were facing imminent federal indictments for fraud and elder abuse.
At 3:30 p.m., as Vanessa sat at an outdoor patio table, the country club’s general manager, a stern man named Richard Burke, walked up to her table accompanied by two security guards.
“Mrs. Mercer,” Richard said, his voice cold and devoid of his usual warmth. “I need you to hand over your membership card immediately.”
Vanessa blinked, her face flushing red. “Excuse me?! Richard, do you have any idea who I am? My husband sits on the executive committee of this club!”
“Your husband’s corporate membership was held under Mercer Enterprises,” Richard replied smoothly. “Miss Eleanor Mercer cancelled the corporate account an hour ago. Furthermore, the club’s board has voted to suspend your personal access effective immediately due to unpaid membership dues totaling forty-two thousand dollars.”
Several wealthy club members sitting nearby turned to stare, whispering behind their sunglasses.
“This is an outrage!” Vanessa screamed, standing up and grabbing her designer handbag. “My husband will sue this club into bankruptcy!”
“Your husband is currently being questioned by the SEC, Mrs. Mercer,” Richard added flatly. “And these gentlemen are here to ensure you vacate the property without incident.”
Two police cruisers pulled up to the country club’s circular driveway, their flashing lights drawing the attention of every guest on the terrace.
Detective Lena Ortiz stepped out of the lead police car, holding an official warrant for physical assault and elder abuse.
“Vanessa Mercer?” Detective Ortiz called out, walking up the stone steps.
Vanessa backed away toward the pool, her eyes wide with terror. “No... no! I didn't push her! Ethan pushed her! It was Ethan’s idea!”
“You were listed as an active co-conspirator on the security footage captured by the cottage’s patio cameras,” Ortiz informed her, pulling a pair of heavy steel handcuffs from her belt. “You opened the glass door, and you stood by while Mrs. Mercer was assaulted.”
“Footage? What footage?!” Vanessa gasped, her voice cracking.

“Mrs. Mercer had a high-definition 4K security camera mounted inside her cottage eaves,” Ortiz revealed, stepping forward and clicking the handcuffs shut around Vanessa’s manicured wrists. “Every second of the assault was recorded in full digital clarity.”
Vanessa burst into hysterical, ugly sobs as she was led down the country club’s terrace steps in front of fifty staring high-society members—the very people she had tried so desperately to impress.
