Chapter 11 - THE BLOODLINE NOBODY EXPECTED|

Sera had spent her childhood believing her mother died in a highway accident when she was eleven.

Her father had never discussed the details beyond saying that the road was wet and the other driver had fled.

Now, in a locked library, Daniel told her that the story was a lie.

“Your mother, Eleanor, was Vincent Vale's daughter,” he said. “She changed her surname when she married me. She wanted nothing to do with her father's criminal dealings.”

Sera stared at him.

“Why didn't you tell me?”

“Because she asked me to protect you from that family.”

“By letting me believe she was just unlucky?”

Daniel's eyes filled with regret.

“I thought the truth would put a target on your back.”

Adrian stood near the window, absorbing the implications.

“If Vincent is Eleanor's father, then Sera is his granddaughter.”

“And the only living relative who can inherit control of several dormant trusts,” Daniel said.

Sera shook her head.

“I don't want his money.”

“This isn't about money,” Adrian replied. “It's about access. Those trusts may be linked to the original ledger.”

Daniel nodded.

“Your mother believed Vincent used the trusts to hide evidence and move assets beyond the reach of investigators. She created a legal safeguard. If the original ledger was ever recovered, ownership of the trusts would transfer to her direct descendants.”

Sera sank into a chair.

“So he wants me because I can unlock something.”

“Yes,” Daniel said.

“And you let me grow up without knowing any of this.”

“I let you grow up believing you could have an ordinary life.”

She stood abruptly.

“I didn't have an ordinary life. I worked two jobs, worried about rent, and wondered why my father never told me what really happened to my mother.”

Daniel bowed his head.

“You deserved better.”

The anger in Sera's chest had nowhere to go.

Adrian approached her, but she raised a hand.

“Don't tell me it's going to be okay.”

“I wasn't going to.”

“Good. Because it isn't.”

He nodded.

“Then we'll deal with what's true.”

That answer helped more than reassurance would have.

The next morning, Adrian's legal team confirmed that an old trust had been registered under Eleanor's maiden name. Its controlling documents were stored in a bank vault requiring two forms of verification: a brass key and a living beneficiary's signature.

Sera possessed one.

The bank possessed the other.

But someone had already requested access to the vault.

The request had been filed using Adrian's father's identity.

Adrian studied the paperwork.

“My father died six years ago,” he said.

The bank's representative spoke nervously over the phone.

“I understand, Mr. Vale. But the request was accompanied by a valid biometric authorization.”

“Whose?”

A pause.

“Your father's.”

Adrian ended the call.

Sera looked at him.

“Either someone has stolen his identity, or—”

“Or he's alive,” Adrian finished.

Daniel closed his eyes.

For the first time, Sera understood why he had feared the truth.

The man who had destroyed their lives might never have died at all.
