Chapter 1 - THE WOMAN WHO RUINED HIS PERFECT NIGHT|

Sera Walsh had learned that the fastest way to survive in a room full of wealthy people was to become someone they never noticed.

At twenty-nine, she could carry a silver tray through a crowded ballroom without interrupting a conversation, memorize twelve drink orders without writing them down, and smile politely at people who considered eye contact from a catering employee an unnecessary inconvenience.

That evening, however, she made a mistake.

A waiter stepped backward into her path, champagne glasses collided, and a glass of red wine spilled across the sleeve of a man whose suit probably cost more than her monthly rent.

“Oh, God. I'm so sorry.”

Sera grabbed a napkin and began blotting the stain before she realized the entire table had fallen silent.

The man looked at his ruined sleeve.

Then he looked at her.

His name was Adrian Vale, although Sera didn't know that yet. In Chicago's financial circles, he was a celebrated investor. In the city's criminal underworld, he was a man whose name could empty a room before he entered it.

Adrian's dark hair was perfectly combed, his expression unreadable, and his gray eyes so cold that Sera briefly wondered whether he'd ever laughed without calculating the consequences.

“Are you planning to scrub the skin off my arm?” he asked.

She immediately withdrew the napkin.

“I was trying to save your jacket.”

“It's a jacket.”

“An expensive jacket.”

“Do you always estimate the value of things before apologizing?”

“Only when I'm afraid the owner might send me a bill.”

A man standing nearby stopped drinking.

Nobody spoke to Adrian Vale like that.

Yet, unexpectedly, Adrian's mouth almost moved into a smile.

Almost.

Then Sera's phone slipped from her pocket and landed beside his polished shoes. Its screen displayed a manuscript she'd been editing between shifts.

Adrian glanced down.

One sentence caught his attention.

The most dangerous man in the room was not the one holding the weapon. It was the one who had forgotten why he needed to survive.

His expression changed.

“Did you write that?”

Sera snatched up her phone.

“It's nothing.”

“Nothing doesn't usually make people sound that angry.”

She stared at him, startled by the accuracy of his observation.

Then she remembered the stain.

“I'm sorry about your sleeve.”

She turned and hurried away.

Across the ballroom, Adrian watched her disappear through the service doors.

His right-hand man, Marcus Reed, approached cautiously.

“Should I have her removed from the event?”

“No.”

“Then what would you like me to do?”

Adrian kept staring at the doorway.

For three years, he'd attended parties, charity galas, private dinners, and political fundraisers without remembering a single face afterward.

But he remembered hers.

“Find out who she is.”

Marcus hesitated.

“And if she's connected to anyone dangerous?”

Adrian finally looked at him.

“Then we'll discover why she was brave enough to spill wine on me.”

That night, for the first time in three years, Adrian Vale asked someone to bring a woman to him.

He had no idea she would eventually become the one person capable of destroying his empire.
