Chapter 18 - The Divorce That Changed the Empire|

Three months passed.

The investigation continued, and the Moretti empire began to fracture under the weight of its own secrets. Several business partners withdrew. Two luxury properties were placed under financial review. The shipping division faced a temporary suspension while investigators examined its contracts.

Adrian stepped down from several leadership positions and appointed independent managers to oversee the legitimate businesses.

His advisers called it surrender.

He called it necessary.

He also agreed to a formal separation agreement that protected Claire and Grace from debts or obligations connected to the companies. Daniel reviewed every clause before Claire signed.

The divorce hearing was scheduled for a rainy Thursday morning.

Claire wore a simple navy dress. She carried no jewelry from the marriage, only her mother's wedding ring on a chain beneath her blouse.

Adrian arrived without bodyguards.

When they stood before the judge, he did not contest the divorce.

He did not challenge Claire's request for primary physical custody, subject to a court-approved parenting plan. He agreed to structured visitation, financial transparency, and independent safeguards to ensure that Grace would not be used as leverage in business disputes.

The judge reviewed the documents.

“Mr. Moretti, do you understand that these agreements are legally binding?”

“Yes, Your Honor.”

“And you are entering them voluntarily?”

“Yes.”

“Do you wish to make any statement?”

Adrian glanced at Claire.

“I do.”

The judge allowed him to continue.

“I failed my wife when she needed me most. I cannot change that by asking the court to give me another chance. I can only accept the consequences and fulfill my responsibilities as a father.”

Claire looked down.

She had expected anger, excuses, or another attempt to negotiate.

She had not expected him to acknowledge the damage without asking her to carry his regret.

The divorce was granted.

Outside the courthouse, reporters crowded the steps. Questions followed them across the pavement.

“Mr. Moretti, are you still involved in organized crime?”

“Mrs. Moretti, did your husband abandon you during pregnancy?”

“Will you reconcile?”

Adrian's security team moved forward, but he raised a hand.

“No questions about my daughter,” he said.

Claire turned toward him.

“That's all you need to say.”

He nodded and let her walk away first.

In the weeks that followed, Adrian began attending parenting sessions arranged through the court. He learned how to prepare a bottle, how to recognize when Grace was tired, and how to soothe her when she cried.

He made mistakes.

He arrived late once because a meeting ran over, then apologized and rescheduled without blaming anyone. Another time, he bought a stroller that was too complicated to fold and spent twenty minutes wrestling with it while Eleanor watched in amusement.

Claire found herself laughing.

It startled her.

For months, she had believed that any happiness involving Adrian would pull her backward. But she was learning that a person could acknowledge good behavior without erasing past harm.

One afternoon, while Grace slept in his arms, Adrian asked Claire a question.

“Do you think there's any chance for us?”

She did not answer immediately.

“I think people can change.”

He waited.

“But change doesn't obligate the person they hurt to return.”

He lowered his eyes.

“I understand.”

“Do you?”

“Yes. Because if I truly love you, I can't make your healing another demand you have to meet for me.”

Claire felt tears gather, but she did not look away.

“That is the first time you've understood what love requires.”

He gave Grace back to her and stood.

“I'll see you both on Saturday.”

“Saturday at ten.”

“I'll be here.”

And he was.

The next Saturday.

And the one after that.

For the first time in their relationship, Adrian's promises became ordinary things he fulfilled without expecting applause.

But just as Claire began to believe the worst might be behind them, Daniel called with an update about Richard Reynolds.

Investigators had located one of his hidden accounts.

The money was gone.

And the account had been accessed from a device registered to someone inside the Moretti family.

Someone who had attended Adrian's father's funeral.

Someone the police had never suspected.
