Chapter 11 - The Wife He Never Knew|

The independent audit uncovered a trail of transactions that reached back more than a decade.
Richard Reynolds had used several companies to move money out of the Moretti trust. Some transfers were small enough to avoid attention. Others were disguised as payments for shipping contracts, property acquisitions, or security services.
But the audit revealed something even more troubling.
Someone had been collecting personal information about Claire for years.
Her medical appointments. Her employment history. Her father's old complaint. Her mother's address. Even the name of the doctor who had delivered Claire when she was born.
Daniel placed the report on the table.
“This isn't ordinary financial fraud,” he said. “Someone has been building a file on your family.”
Claire felt sick.
“Why?”
“We don't know yet.”
Adrian sat opposite her, his hands folded tightly.
“I didn't order any of this.”
Claire looked at him.
“Did you know someone was monitoring me?”
“No.”
“Did you ever ask your men to investigate my father?”
“No.”
“Then why does your organization have records about him?”
Adrian had no answer.
For years, he had believed that being in control meant knowing everything. Now he was discovering that his own employees had hidden information from him, his advisers had manipulated the family trust, and the woman he loved had been left exposed to dangers he had never bothered to understand.
“I'll find who did it,” he said.
Claire shook her head.
“You'll give Daniel access to your records. You'll cooperate with the investigation. You won't make threats or send anyone to frighten people into talking.”
Adrian nodded.
“Agreed.”
She studied him.
“You're accepting a lot of conditions.”
“I am.”
“Why?”
He looked toward the window.
“Because I used to believe that if I provided enough money and protection, I could call myself a good husband. I was wrong.”
Claire felt her chest tighten.
He continued.
“I can't undo the appointments I missed. I can't give you back the nights you spent crying alone. But I can stop making your life harder.”
For the first time, his apology did not contain a request for forgiveness.
Claire did not offer it.
But she listened.
That afternoon, Adrian visited Grace under an arrangement approved by Daniel. He arrived at Claire's house alone, carrying no gifts. Eleanor opened the door and led him into the living room.
Claire sat on the sofa with Grace in her arms.
Adrian stopped several feet away.
“May I sit?”
Claire nodded.
He lowered himself into a chair and looked at his daughter.
Grace was awake, studying the room with serious dark eyes.
“Hello, sweetheart,” he whispered.
The baby made a small sound.
Adrian's face crumpled for a second before he controlled himself.
“She's perfect.”
Claire watched him carefully.
“You can hold her if you wash your hands first.”
He looked at her in disbelief.
“Are you sure?”
“Yes. But if she cries, give her back to me. This isn't about proving anything.”
Adrian washed his hands and returned. Claire placed Grace in his arms.
He held her awkwardly at first, terrified that even the smallest movement might hurt her.
Grace opened her mouth in a yawn.
Adrian laughed softly.
It was the first genuine laugh Claire had heard from him in months.
Then his phone vibrated.
He glanced at the screen and went pale.
“What is it?” Claire asked.
He showed her the message.
WE KNOW ABOUT THE BLUE KEY. STOP THE INVESTIGATION OR YOUR DAUGHTER WILL PAY.
Claire reached for Grace.
Adrian immediately returned the baby to her.
For once, he did not tell Claire that he would handle everything.
He simply asked, “What do you want to do?”
Claire held her daughter close.
May you like
“Tell the police.”
And Adrian, the man who had spent his life solving problems in secret, finally agreed to let the truth come into the light.
