Chapter 13 - The Price of a Father's Secret|

Richard Reynolds had spent years making certain that no single person possessed enough information to destroy him.

He kept copies of important documents in different locations. He used intermediaries for financial transfers. He paid people who asked questions and frightened those who refused to stop asking.

But he had made one mistake.

He had underestimated Claire Bennett.

She was not a Mafia boss. She had no private army, no criminal empire, and no reputation that made strangers tremble.

She had something Richard had never learned to respect.

Patience.

Claire and Daniel worked with investigators to reconstruct the final weeks of her father's life. They found a payment made to a private security company three days before the accident. The company had dissolved years earlier, but its former director agreed to cooperate after learning that the investigation had been reopened.

He identified Richard Reynolds as the person who had hired him.

The director also produced a ledger containing a series of payments to an unnamed driver.

The final payment was dated the day Claire's father died.

Adrian read the report in silence.

“My father knew Richard was dangerous,” he said.

“Your father knew a lot of things,” Claire replied. “The question is what he chose to do with that knowledge.”

Adrian looked down.

“I protected the family name instead of asking whether the family deserved protection.”

It was not an excuse.

Claire appreciated that.

Investigators also recovered an email exchange between Richard and a former Moretti accountant. The messages suggested that Claire's father had discovered the trust was being used to conceal payments connected to criminal operations.

He had threatened to report the transactions.

Richard had responded by arranging the meeting that put him on the road where he died.

The evidence was compelling, but Daniel warned that the case was not complete.

“We need to establish who caused the crash and whether anyone else was involved. A motive and a payment are not the same as proof of murder.”

Claire nodded.

“I understand.”

She wanted Richard punished, but she did not want revenge to become another excuse for people to ignore the law.

Adrian, however, struggled with the delay.

“Every day he remains free is another day he can hurt someone.”

“And every day we collect evidence is another day we make it harder for him to escape,” Claire replied.

He looked at her.

“You're better at this than I am.”

“I'm not better. I'm simply not willing to confuse anger with justice.”

That evening, Adrian made a decision that shocked his advisers.

He agreed to surrender relevant business records to investigators, including documents that could expose his own role in questionable transactions.

Marcus Bell warned him that several partners might abandon the organization.

“They'll say you're cooperating because Claire has turned against you.”

“Let them.”

“They may try to remove you.”

Adrian closed the folder.

“Then they'll have to explain why they preferred silence.”

The next morning, news outlets reported that federal investigators were examining financial misconduct connected to several Moretti companies.

The headlines were brutal.

CHICAGO MAFIA BOSS UNDER INVESTIGATION.

SECRET TRUST TRANSFERS LINKED TO DEAD ACCOUNTANT.

MORETTI FAMILY'S FINANCIAL EMPIRE FACES UNCERTAINTY.

Claire read the reports without satisfaction.

She had not wanted Adrian destroyed.

She had wanted him to understand that his power did not place him above the consequences of his choices.

Later, he called her.

“I'm not asking you to come back,” he said. “I only want you to know that whatever happens, Grace will have a father who tells her the truth.”

Claire looked at her daughter sleeping in the crib.

“Then start by telling the investigators everything.”

“I will.”

For the first time, she believed he might mean it.

But believing he could change was not the same as agreeing to love him again.
