THE LOUNGE AT GATE 12 / Chapter 4 / 10

Chapter 4 - The UnravelingThe boardroom erupted into immediate, frantic murmurs.

Arthur Sterling stood up from his chair, his eyes wide as he stared at the projection on the wall. “A forgery?! Eleanor, what are you saying?!”

“I am saying,” I spoke clearly, looking directly into Daniel’s pale, trembling face, “that I never saw, reviewed, or signed this document. My signature was fraudulently copied from my 2022 tax records using an optical scanner.”

Daniel’s face flushed a deep, panicked red. “That’s a lie! She’s confused! Eleanor has been under immense emotional stress since her father passed away! She signed this document on Sunday evening in our kitchen!”

“On Sunday evening,” Miriam Shaw announced, stepping forward with an official notarized affidavit, “Miss Hartwell was at the Logan Airport First-Class Lounge at Gate 12. Where she recorded Mr. Daniel Miller discussing the deliberate fraud with Miss Victoria Vance.”

Miriam tapped a remote control.

The large projection screen switched from the document scan to a crisp, high-definition video recording.

Daniel’s own voice echoed loudly through the high-end speakers of the boardroom:

“She signs whatever I put in front of her. She still thinks the company is barely surviving... After the transfer, I file for divorce, we sell the Boston house, move the money offshore, and Eleanor gets the debts.”

The video clearly showed Daniel kissing Noah’s hair, Victoria sliding the blue folder across the table, and Daniel explicitly outlining his plan to bankrupt Hartwell Aviation.

The room went completely, terrifyingly silent.

One of the senior shareholders slammed his fist onto the table. “Disgraceful! Absolute betrayal!”

Daniel staggered backward, bumping into the executive chair, his eyes darting frantically around the room as if searching for an exit. “No... wait! Listen to me! That video was altered! It’s an AI generation! She’s trying to frame me!”

“In addition,” I continued calmly, ignoring his pathetic screaming, “forensic audits completed at dawn today confirm that over the last forty-eight months, Daniel Miller embezzled twelve million dollars through fraudulent sub-contracting agreements with Vance Defense Tech—funds that were funneled directly into an offshore account in Grand Cayman owned by Victoria Vance.”

Victoria pulled her arm away from the officer, her face pale with fury, turning to glare at Daniel. “You told me you had complete control over the trust, you idiot!”

“Shut up, Victoria!” Daniel shrieked, his composure completely shattering.

Arthur Sterling turned to the state police officers. “Officers, remove these criminals from our company!”

The lead state police detective stepped forward, pulling a pair of heavy steel handcuffs from his belt. “Daniel Miller, you are under arrest for corporate fraud, grand larceny, forgery, and wire fraud.”

“Eleanor! Eleanor, please!” Daniel screamed as the officer grabbed his wrists and forced them behind his back. “Talk to them! I did it for us! I was trying to grow the business! Think about our ten years together!”

I stood at the head of the table, holding my father’s old silver fountain pen, looking down at him with an expression of pure, unshakeable coldness.

“You told your secret son that I was very good at losing quietly, Daniel,” I whispered as the handcuffs clicked shut around his wrists.

“You forgot that I learned how to fight from my father.”
