Chapter 6 - The House Went Dark

At 9:46 p.m. two nights later, every light in Moretti Estate went out.

Backup generators should have activated in less than six seconds.

They did not.

Emergency strips glowed red along the floors.

Daniel was beside me before darkness fully settled.

“Internal sabotage.”

“Claire?”

“Safe room.”

“Lily?”

“With her.”

Gunfire cracked outside.

Not close.

Perimeter.

A distraction.

Security radios filled with clipped voices.

“North gate movement.”

“Vehicle breach.”

“Thermal lost sector four.”

Daniel grabbed my shoulder.

“You stay here.”

“No.”

“Adrian.”

“Victor is here for Claire.”

“Exactly why you stay away from where he wants you.”

Gabriel’s voice returned in memory.

Don’t let power make every problem something you solve alone.

I hated good advice when it prevented action.

I stayed in command center.

Daniel deployed teams.

Backup network isolated.

We switched to hardline systems.

The attackers hit the north fence with a stolen utility truck while someone attempted access through the service tunnel.

The tunnel should have been sealed.

Simon knew it.

Victor knew through Simon.

Claire and Lily were moved through an internal passage to a hardened room behind the library.

Then Claire called me.

Not from the safe room.

“Where are you?”

“Hallway.”

My blood turned cold.

“Why?”

“Lily is gone.”

“What?”

“She was beside me. Lights went out. One of the guards said move. Then she—”

“Which guard?”

“I don’t know.”

I looked at Daniel.

“Safe-room escort roster.”

Three names.

One did not answer radio.

Officer Mark Ellis.

Employed eight months.

Background clean.

Too clean, apparently.

We tracked his badge.

Moving toward greenhouse corridor.

I ran.

Daniel swore and followed.

At the greenhouse entrance, Ellis held Lily in one arm and a gun in the other.

Lily was crying silently, rabbit pressed between them.

“Stop,” Ellis shouted.

I did.

Daniel angled behind marble cover.

“Put her down.”

Ellis was sweating.

“This wasn’t supposed to happen.”

“What?”

“Victor said just bring the girl.”

“So do not make it worse.”

“He’ll kill me.”

“Maybe. I won’t if you put her down.”

Daniel whispered through earpiece, “Keep him talking.”

Lily looked at me.

“Mr. Adrian.”

My chest tightened.

“It’s okay.”

Ellis jerked gun toward me.

“Shut up.”

Lily flinched.

Something in me changed.

Not rage.

Focus.

“Mark,” I said, using his first name. “Victor already abandoned Simon.”

Ellis blinked.

“You know that.”

Silence.

“He will abandon you too.”

“He promised money.”

“Then why are you still holding the child instead of getting paid?”

That landed.

“He needs you exposed, not rewarded.”

Ellis’s grip loosened slightly.

“Put Lily down and tell us how he got in. You become cooperating witness.”

“He’ll find me.”

“Then hide behind people better than him.”

Lily suddenly bit his hand.

Hard.

Ellis shouted and dropped his arm.

Daniel moved.

One shot.

Ellis’s gun flew across floor as another officer tackled him.

Lily ran directly into me.

I knelt and caught her.

She wrapped both arms around my neck.

“You came.”

“Yes.”

“I knew.”

That almost broke me.

Claire arrived seconds later, screaming Lily’s name.

Mother and daughter collided in tears.

I stood away.

Let them have each other.

Security restored power twelve minutes later.

Victor never entered personally.

His team retreated after perimeter response.

Three attackers were arrested.

One hospitalized.

No security staff killed.

Mark Ellis confessed quickly.

Victor had paid him to infiltrate Moretti security eight months earlier.

Eight months.

Same time Claire started working at estate.

Coincidence?

No.

Victor knew where she was almost from beginning.

Why wait?

Because he hoped she would lead him to evidence.

Claire had believed estate hid her.

Instead she brought Victor directly near me.

She blamed herself.

I stopped that immediately.

“You did not bring him here. He chose.”

She looked at me.

“You could have died.”

“So could Lily.”

“That’s because of me.”

“No. Because of Victor.”

Language matters when guilt wants easy hosts.

The attackers provided a location.

Victor was using an industrial property south of Chicago linked to Kane Meridian.

Police raided.

Empty.

But one laptop remained.

On it: surveillance of my estate, Claire’s daycare, Lily’s routes, board members, Matteo, Daniel, Michael.

And a file titled MORETTI SUCCESSION.

Inside were plans for what happened if I died.

Victor intended to destabilize company, trigger debt covenants, then acquire assets through proxies.

I was not only revenge target.

Business target.

Again.

He had built strategy around personal pain.

Then we found video.

Victor speaking directly to camera.

“Adrian, if you are watching this, you finally learned what your family really is.”

He smiled.

“Your father sold me routes. Your uncle lied. Your brother died because everyone wanted to protect you from truth.”

I wanted to smash screen.

Didn’t.

Victor continued.

“And now you’re protecting Claire Bellamy. Careful. Men like us don’t get happy endings. We get leverage.”

Claire stood beside me.

I looked at her.

Victor had miscalculated one thing.

He thought affection made people weaker because he only understood people as leverage.

Maybe once I had too.

Not anymore.

Then Lily walked into the room holding Michael’s hand.

“Can Mommy sleep now?”

Claire smiled through exhaustion.

“Yes, baby.”

Lily looked at me.

“You too.”

I almost laughed.

“Apparently I have orders.”

She nodded seriously.

That night, for first time in days, I slept.

Not because Victor disappeared.

May you like

Because I finally understood we were not going to beat him by becoming more ruthless.

We were going to make sure nobody he threatened had to stand alone.
