Two years after Victor’s conviction, divers working with county investigators recovered a waterproof case from debris near old marina connected to Gabriel’s accident.
Inside was letter.

Water damaged but legible.
Gabriel had written it hours before crash.
Adrian, if I’m wrong, make fun of me forever. If I’m right, I need you to understand something. Dad got involved with Kane because he was ashamed. Matteo hid it because he was ashamed. I hid investigation because I thought I was protecting you from shame. We Moretti men are apparently idiots with expensive suits.
I laughed through tears.

If anything happens to me, do not become a monument to revenge. Build something better than what Dad left us. Protect people who cannot buy protection. And please date somebody who tells you no occasionally.
Claire read over shoulder.

“Unfortunately.”
I framed letter in office.
Not hidden.
Company employees could see.
