Chapter 12 - The Wedding Victor Could Not Ruin

Our wedding was small by Moretti standards and enormous by Claire’s.
Eighty guests.
Estate garden.
No media.
Security discreet.
Lily carried purple rabbit and rings.
Matteo cried before ceremony began.
Denied later.
Daniel stood beside me.
Michael officiated because apparently doctors can get ordained online.
Claire walked herself down aisle.
Important.
She chose me.
Nobody gave her.
Vows:
Claire: “I promise to tell you when you are being impossible.”
Me: “Already fulfilled.”
Laughter.
Then: “I promise never to confuse protecting you with controlling you.”
Claire’s eyes filled.
She said, “I promise never to disappear instead of asking for help.”
We kissed.
Lily shouted, “Finally.”
Reception warm.
No violence.
No betrayal.
No midnight threat.
I almost distrusted peace.
Then relaxed.
Victor sent no message.
Couldn’t.

He was transferred to federal facility far away.
Life moved.
