Chapter 6 - The Letter in Floral Ink

With tears blurring his vision, Sean unfolded the letter. Evelyn’s gentle, steady voice echoed through every written word:
“My dearest Sean,
From the very first afternoon you fixed my fence with split boots and hollow eyes, I saw the ghost you were carrying. You thought you were hiding behind a wall of cold ambition, pretending to care about money and houses, but I have lived seventy-one years, darling—I know the difference between greed and grief.
I knew you were twenty-five and broken. I knew your father died when you were young, and I knew you lost your little sister Maya when you were only seventeen, spending every dollar you earned trying to hire cheap detectives who stole your money and gave you false hope.
When you married me, you thought you were using me to buy your freedom. But you gave me something I hadn't felt since my Thomas passed away: a home filled with life, laughter, and someone to care for. You kept my garden alive, you held my hand at the doctor's office, and you gave an old woman a reason to wake up every morning with purpose.
I couldn't leave you millions of dollars, Sean. Easy wealth would have swallowed you whole and kept you trapped in the darkness that brought you to my door. Instead, I spent eighty thousand dollars of my savings over the last six months hiring the best private investigative firm in the country to finish the search you started.
Maya is alive, Sean. She was taken by a fraudulent youth labor ring, survived, and built a peaceful life under an assumed name in New Mexico, believing you had given up on her.
Go find your sister, Sean. Rebuild your family. You are not a cold man, and you never were. You are a boy who loved his sister so much he forgot how to love himself.
With all my love and blessings, Evelyn.”

Sean collapsed over the conference table, burying his face in the shoebox, weeping with an intensity that shook his entire body.
Bradley and his relatives stood in stunned, embarrassed silence, unable to utter a single word as the raw, undeniable truth filled the room.
