Chapter 10 - The Rose in the Desert

Two years after the reading of the will, the garden behind Sean and Maya’s adobe home was in full, radiant bloom.

In the center of the desert courtyard stood a sturdy stone arbor covered in white English tea roses—cuttings Sean had carefully transported from Evelyn’s garden in Pacific Heights. The delicate white petals contrasted beautifully against the warm red earth and azure New Mexico sky.

Sitting around the wide cedar dining table—a table Sean had built with his own hands—were Maya, her fiancé Carlos, their workshop apprentices, and neighbors from the community.

Sean walked out from the kitchen carrying a large wooden bowl of roasted green chile stew and fresh cornbread, setting it in the center of the table as everyone cheered.

Beside his seat was a comfortable wooden armchair where a framed photograph of Evelyn sat on the sideboard, decorated with a fresh white rose.

Maya stood up, raising her glass of iced tea with a bright, radiant smile.

"To Sean," Maya toasted, her eyes shining with love. "To the brother who brought us home."

"To Sean!" the table echoed with laughter and applause.

Sean smiled, his hand reaching into his pocket to touch the smooth silver filigree bracelet his sister had given him that morning.

He looked up at the white roses climbing along the arbor, catching the golden rays of the setting sun.
