Chapter 2 - The Boots on the Porch

Life in Evelyn’s spacious Victorian home in Pacific Heights fell into a steady, quiet rhythm.

Sean took meticulous care of the grounds, repaired the historic copper gutters, drove Evelyn to her weekly watercolor classes, and escorted her to symphony galas. He maintained the polished facade of a dutiful partner, always careful to keep his emotional distance.

Yet Evelyn responded to his cold calculations with unconditional, disarming warmth.

Every evening, Sean would return from his part-time carpentry workshop to find a hot, home-cooked meal waiting on the dining table—roast chicken with rosemary, savory beef stews, or homemade apple tarts. Whenever his worn leather work boots began to tear along the soles, he would wake up to find a brand-new pair of handcrafted Red Wing work boots placed neatly beside the front door.

One freezing November morning, a heavy, shearling-lined wool coat appeared on the coat rack in the foyer.

"You'll catch your death wearing that faded denim jacket, Sean," Evelyn said with a warm chuckle, adjusting his collar with gentle hands.

Sean looked down at her wrinkled, smiling face, feeling a sharp pang of guilt. "Evelyn... you shouldn't keep spending money on me."

"Money is just paper, Sean," she replied softly, her gray eyes holding a depth of wisdom that unnerved him. "It only has value when it keeps someone you care about warm."

Instead of softening, Sean hardened his defenses. He reminded himself of the bank ledgers in her oak roll-top desk, the deed to the four-million-dollar Victorian, and the stock portfolios tied to her late husband’s maritime shipping trust. Every time he sorted her prescription bottles on the marble kitchen counter, he felt the cold calculus of his ambition returning.

"Just two or three years," he would tell himself in the mirror. "Just hold on, and you'll never be poor again."
