Chapter 3 - The Freezing at DawnAt six o'clock the following morning, while the sun was just beginning to streak the sky in golden light, Victor arrived at the headquarters of Bennett Construction Group.

He was wearing a custom tailored suit, humming to himself, preparing to execute a forced transfer of company funds to cover his payroll debts.

As he walked up to the glass entrance doors, his keycard flashed red: [ACCESS DENIED — TRUSTEE LOCKOUT.]

Victor frowned, kicking the glass door in irritation. He pulled out his phone to call his chief financial officer, but his mobile screen displayed a continuous string of frantic text alerts:

CFO: Victor! The bank just froze our entire commercial line of credit! All operating accounts are locked!

CFO: State marshals are at the site! They’ve posted a cease-and-desist notice on the heavy equipment!

Victor’s phone buzzed in his hand. It was Dad calling from the mansion.

“Victor!” Dad screamed over the line, his voice hoarse and heaving with pure panic. “What is happening?! The bank just declined my credit card at the country club! They said our primary family trust is under federal foreclosure lock!”

Victor stood on the sidewalk outside his locked office building, his jaw slack, the blood draining from his face as a black sedan pulled up to the curb.

Stepping out of the vehicle was Margaret Vance—the senior lead attorney for the Hale Trust—accompanied by two uniformed officers from the State Attorney General’s Financial Crimes Bureau.

“Victor Bennett?” Attorney Vance spoke calmly, holding a leather binder. “As managing trustee of the Hale Estate, Ms. Claire Bennett has invoked Section 9 of the secured-creditor covenant. All corporate accounts, construction machinery, and credit lines tied to Bennett Construction are seized immediately.”
