Chapter 2 - The Ghost of the DinerCeleste blinked in shock, her hand dropping to her side. âDaniel? What are you doing?! She ruined my dress!â

âShe didn't ruin anything, Celeste,â Daniel said, his voice flat, low, and cold as winter iron. âYou backed into her cart.â
âAre you taking the maidâs side over mine?!â Celeste gasped, looking around at the watching crowd with growing embarrassment.
Daniel ignored her completely. He turned slowly toward Maria, staring at her face as if he were seeing a ghost. His eyes traveled from her tired brown eyes to the small silver ring on her thumb, then back to her face.
âMaria...?â Daniel whispered.
Maria looked at the billionaire in confusion, wiping a tear from her cheek. âSir...? Iâm sorry... do I know you?â
A slow, profound emotion swept across Danielâs face. Nine years vanished in an instant.
Nine years ago, Daniel had been twenty-three years old, grieving his fatherâs sudden death, nearly broke, and sitting in a greasy diner off Route 9 in the middle of a freezing storm. He had ordered a cheap burger and coffee, but when he went to pay, his card was declinedâhis late fatherâs estate had been frozen by creditors.
The diner manager had threatened to call the police over an eight-dollar meal.
Then, a young waitress had quietly stepped in, pulling ten dollars from her own tip jar and handing it to the manager.
When Daniel tried to thank her, embarrassed beyond words, the young woman had smiled gently and said: âEverybody needs a little grace sometimes. Pass it on when you can.â
That waitress was Maria Alvarez.
Daniel had spent nine years looking for her, searching for the woman whose ten-dollar act of kindness had given him the hope to keep fighting, build his software empire, and become the man he was today.

Mariaâs eyes widened in realization. âThe boy in the brown jacket...â
