Chapter 7 - THE WOMAN WHO WANTED TO BE INVISIBLE|

The custody application was rejected within twenty-four hours, but the damage had already begun.

Samantha's landlord claimed she had abandoned her apartment. A former coworker told a reporter that she frequently brought Tyler to work and left him unattended. An anonymous account posted photographs of the safe apartment's exterior with a caption suggesting that Samantha had sold her child to a wealthy criminal.

The story spread through social media.

By lunchtime, strangers were calling her a bad mother.

Samantha sat at the kitchen table, staring at her phone.

“I have never left Tyler alone. Not once.”

Franco stood nearby, reading the posts.

“I know.”

“People are going to believe this.”

“Some will.”

She looked up, wounded by his honesty.

He put the phone down.

“But the people who matter will examine the evidence. We'll document where Tyler was every night, who was present, and what happened at the restaurant. We'll let the truth do its work.”

“You can afford lawyers. You can hire experts. You can make calls until someone listens. I can't.”

Franco pulled out the chair opposite her.

“Then let me lend you the resources without taking away your voice.”

“I don't want to become your responsibility.”

“You're not. You're Tyler's mother. That's different.”

The words settled between them.

For years, Samantha had defined herself by what she could endure. She endured landlords, managers, canceled babysitters, and strangers who judged her for being tired. She had learned to apologize for needing help and to hide every sign of exhaustion.

Franco did not ask her to become a different woman.

He asked her to stop carrying everything alone.

That afternoon, she met with Helen Brooks, an attorney recommended by Luca. Helen reviewed the accusations and found that the custody application had been filed through a shell organization funded by Wells.

The landlord had received a payment two days earlier.

The former coworker had been offered a job at one of Wells's properties.

Every accusation led back to the same source.

“He's constructing a public narrative,” Helen explained. “If he can't reach Tyler directly, he wants authorities to view Samantha as incapable of caring for him.”

Samantha's hands tightened.

“He wants my son taken away so he can get to Franco.”

“That's the likely strategy.”

“Then we'll fight it.”

The determination in her own voice surprised her.

She collected the screenshots, contacted her former manager, and found two coworkers willing to testify that Tyler had always remained in the back office under supervision. Rita, the longtime cook, agreed to provide a statement about the night Brandon had insulted him.

“Tell me where to sign,” Rita said over the phone. “That man has been mistreating people for years.”

Samantha began to understand that she had never been as invisible as she thought. People had noticed. Some had stayed silent because they were afraid, but others were waiting for someone to speak first.

That evening, she found Franco helping Tyler build a wooden train set.

The billionaire had rolled up his sleeves and was kneeling on the rug, carefully connecting two tracks while Tyler watched with intense concentration.

“You're doing it backward,” Tyler informed him.

Franco examined the track.

“So I am.”

“You have to turn it around.”

“Thank you for saving the entire railway system.”

Tyler giggled.

Samantha stood in the doorway, feeling warmth spread through a place in her chest she had kept closed for years.

Then Franco looked up.

“Would you like to help?”

She sat beside them.

For an hour, the three of them built bridges and stations. Tyler placed a small figure in each carriage and assigned them names. One was a train conductor. One was a doctor. One was a mother who always knew the way home.

Franco asked which figure represented him.

Tyler considered the question before pointing to a tiny wooden man standing near the station.

“You're the one who came back.”

Franco went very still.

Samantha looked at him.

He managed a smile for the boy, but when Tyler returned to his drawing, Franco turned away and wiped his eyes.

Late that night, Luca delivered a security report.

The man who had photographed Tyler outside the restaurant had been identified. He worked for a private security contractor hired by Wells.

But his employment record contained a surprise.

Before joining Wells, he had worked for a Richetti associate who had been murdered six years earlier.

The night Franco disappeared from Samantha's life.

And the associate's name was written beside a payment marked pregnancy inquiry.
