Chapter 18 - THE NIGHT BRANDON WELLS LOST HIS MASK|

The charity gala at the Hawthorne Hotel had been planned for months.
Hundreds of guests were expected, including business leaders, philanthropists, politicians, and members of New York's old-money families. The event celebrated the foundation's commitment to vulnerable children and would culminate in a televised announcement about its new guardianship initiative.
Brandon Wells intended to use the evening to destroy Franco's credibility.
Instead, Samantha decided to use his own stage against him.
Helen Brooks arranged for independent investigators to authenticate the adoption documents, the trust papers, and the payment ledger. Several former employees agreed to testify. Mara Voss provided a sworn statement explaining how the false adoption had been created, while Salvatore's recorded confession established the connection between Wells and the attempted abduction.
The evidence was compelling, but the board could still delay action by questioning its origin.
Brandon believed he had prepared for every possibility.
He did not expect Samantha to walk into the gala.
She wore a simple black dress, her hair pinned back neatly. She had no diamonds, no designer handbag, and no interest in pretending to belong to a world that had once treated her like dirt on the floor.
Franco walked beside her.
Tyler remained at the country house with a trusted caregiver, protected by a security team and supervised by a police liaison.
At the entrance, a reporter recognized Samantha.
“Ms. Cooper! Is it true you're trying to claim a fortune through your child?”
Samantha stopped.
“No. I'm trying to protect my son from people who believe his existence gives them ownership over him.”
The reporter raised her microphone.
“Do you believe Mr. Wells is responsible for the threats against your family?”
“I believe the evidence should be heard in court. Tonight, I'm here to ensure it is no longer hidden.”
They entered the ballroom.
Brandon stood near the stage, smiling for photographs. When he saw them, his expression tightened briefly, then recovered.
“Franco,” he greeted them. “You brought the waitress.”
Samantha looked at him calmly.
“You brought the cameras. I assumed you wanted people to hear the truth.”
Several guests turned toward them.
Brandon laughed.
“I'm afraid you've misunderstood the purpose of this event.”
“Then perhaps you should explain why a charity foundation hired men to abduct my six-year-old son.”
A hush spread through the ballroom.
Brandon's smile vanished.
“That's an outrageous accusation.”
Helen stepped forward and handed a document to the board chairman.
“We have authenticated financial records, security footage, and witness statements connecting Wells-controlled companies to the attempted abduction. We also have evidence of a fraudulent adoption order filed in the name of Samantha Cooper.”
Brandon seized the papers.
“These documents are stolen.”
“They were obtained through lawful requests and provided by witnesses,” Helen replied. “Their authenticity has been verified independently.”
The chairman began reading.
Brandon's face changed with every page.
He turned toward the crowd.
“This is a private family dispute being presented as a scandal. Mr. Richetti is using his influence to frighten a charitable organization into surrendering its assets.”
Franco stepped toward the microphone.
“My family has spent decades hiding behind the word private. My father did it. My uncle did it. I allowed it to continue because I believed keeping control was the same as keeping people safe.”
He looked toward Samantha.
“That ends tonight.”
He announced that he was voluntarily suspending his authority over the disputed trust pending a full independent investigation. He also released the relevant financial records to the authorities.
The decision sent a ripple through the ballroom.
Brandon stared at him.
“You're destroying your own company.”
“No,” Franco said. “I'm giving it a chance to survive without the people who corrupted it.”
The chairman called for an emergency vote to suspend Wells from the foundation board.
Brandon objected, shouting that he had been framed. But when the security footage began playing on the ballroom screen, his protest died.
The video showed a Wells contractor entering the apartment building with a weapon.
Another recording captured the delivery van outside Tyler's route.
And a final audio clip played Wells's own voice.
“Bring me the boy's mother. She knows where the original evidence is hidden.”
The room erupted.
Brandon turned toward the side exit.
Two plainclothes investigators stepped into his path.
“You're coming with us, Mr. Wells.”
He looked toward Franco.
“You think this makes you a good man?”
“No,” Franco replied. “It makes me a man who finally stopped pretending he was powerless to choose.”
Brandon was escorted from the ballroom as cameras flashed.
Samantha let out a shaky breath.
It was over—or at least the part everyone could see.
Then Luca hurried toward them, holding a phone.
“Boss, we have a problem.”
Franco turned.
“What now?”
“The country house just received a call. Someone tried to enter through the eastern gate.”
Samantha's heart stopped.
“Tyler?”
“He's safe,” Luca said quickly. “The guards stopped the vehicle before it reached the house.”
“Who was inside?”
Luca showed them a photograph from the security camera.

The driver was Salvatore Richetti.
But Salvatore was still in police custody.
