Chapter 13 - THE BOY WHO LEFT A CLUE|

The abandoned freight depot stood beyond a row of shuttered warehouses, its windows black and its loading platforms overgrown with weeds.
Samantha recognized it immediately.
The building matched Tyler's drawing: the long roofline, the narrow upper windows, and the faded red service door. She had taken him past it on the way to his specialist because the railway crossing nearby was one of the few places where he could watch trains without being overwhelmed by crowds.
He had drawn the depot several times afterward.
Now the sight of it made her stomach turn.
Franco's security team surrounded the property without entering. The police contact had warned them that an unauthorized assault could endanger Tyler, so they needed confirmation that the boy was inside before moving.
Samantha stood beside the hood of the car with Tyler's notebook clutched against her chest.
“He'll be frightened,” she whispered.
Franco looked at her.
“We'll bring him home.”
“You keep saying that as if the words can make it happen.”
“No. I'm saying it because I need you to know what I'm working toward.”
She wanted to believe him.
A small metal object fell from the notebook and struck the pavement.
Samantha picked it up.
It was a blue train token Tyler had found near the railway crossing. He had carried it around for weeks, placing it beside his drawings whenever he wanted to remember the route.
She looked at the picture again.
The red door.
The upper windows.
And a small blue circle drawn near the building's eastern corner.
“He marked the service entrance,” she said.
Luca leaned over the notebook.
“Or the place where he saw the token.”
Samantha shook her head.
“Tyler draws what matters to him. When he wants me to understand something, he repeats the important part. The blue circle is not decoration.”
She pointed to the eastern wall.
“There are tracks behind that side. If the kidnappers wanted to move him without using the main entrance, that's where they'd go.”
Franco ordered two men to investigate quietly.
Within minutes, they returned with confirmation.
A side door had been forced open recently. Fresh tire marks led from the loading platform to a storage area at the back of the building.
The team moved into position.
Franco turned to Samantha.
“When we find him, let me approach first. If Tyler is overwhelmed, too many people at once could frighten him.”
She nodded.
“And if he reaches for me?”
“Then you go to him.”
They entered through the eastern service door.
The air smelled of dust, oil, and damp concrete. Farther inside, a machine hummed. A single light glowed beneath a metal staircase.
A guard appeared at the end of the corridor.
Luca intercepted him before he could shout.
The team moved forward.
Samantha could hear Tyler humming somewhere behind the wall.
The melody was faint but unmistakable.
She began humming with him.
The sound seemed to guide her through the building. Past a stack of shipping crates. Around a broken conveyor belt. Toward a room with a red door.
Franco reached it first.
He opened the door slowly.
Tyler sat on the floor beside an overturned chair. His wrists were not tied, but a man stood near the exit, blocking his way. Another man was speaking into a phone.
When they saw Franco, both reached for their weapons.
Everything happened at once.
Luca shouted.
One guard rushed forward.
Franco moved between the men and the child, forcing the first attacker away from Tyler. A sharp report echoed through the room, and a window shattered overhead.
Samantha stayed low, moving toward her son.
“Tyler, sweetheart! Look at Mommy!”
Tyler pressed his hands to his ears.
She knelt several feet away and hummed the lullaby.
One note.
Then another.
He lowered his hands.
Samantha stretched out her arms.
“Come to me when you're ready.”
Tyler crawled toward her, then threw himself into her embrace.
She wrapped both arms around him, checking his face and hands while he clung to her neck.
“I'm here,” she repeated. “I'm right here.”
Franco stood nearby, breathing hard. His sleeve was torn, and blood ran from a shallow cut at his temple, but he did not appear to notice.
Tyler reached one hand toward him.
“Daddy.”
Franco knelt beside them.
“I'm here too, buddy.”
For a brief moment, the three of them stayed together on the dusty floor.
Then Luca entered, holding the phone taken from one of the kidnappers.
“We have a name,” he said.
Franco looked up.
“The man who hired them?”
Luca nodded.
“Brandon Wells paid for the operation. But the final authorization came from someone using an internal Richetti security code.”
Franco's face hardened.
“Whose code?”
Luca looked at Samantha, then at Franco.
“Salvatore's.”
Samantha held Tyler closer.
Outside, sirens approached.
The police had been called, but the kidnappers' employer had not yet been found.

And as Franco helped Samantha carry Tyler toward the exit, a voice came through the recovered phone.
“Good work,” Brandon Wells said. “Now bring me the boy's mother.”
