The Ghost in the Accounting / Chapter 9 / 10

Chapter 9 - The Last SettlementThe trial of David Sterling was short.

With the overwhelming evidence Claire had provided, the defense had no leverage. David pleaded guilty to all charges to avoid a maximum thirty-year sentence.

Claire was called to testify during the sentencing hearing to verify the financial records. She stood in the witness box, wearing a simple navy blue suit, looking calm, professional, and entirely at peace.

David sat at the defense table, looking diminished. He didn't look like the confident, arrogant man who had demanded "everything" in the courtroom months ago. He looked like a ghost.

When the prosecutor asked Claire to explain the nature of the offshore transfers, she did so with absolute clarity, translating complex financial terms into simple, undeniable facts.

"The defendant used investor funds as his personal piggy bank," Claire explained to the judge. "He created a system where survival depended on continuous deception. When that deception was threatened, he attempted to insulate himself by dumping the liability onto others. But the numbers do not lie. The paper trail always leads back to the decision-maker."

The judge nodded, impressed by her precision.

When Claire stepped down from the witness box, she passed David’s table. For a split second, their eyes met. There was no anger in Claire’s eyes, only a quiet, final pity.

David looked away, unable to meet her gaze.
