Chapter 5 - The Fall of the First DominoThe leak happened on a Tuesday.

A major real estate blog published an exclusive article titled: “Sterling Developments Facing Federal Probe Over Missing Escrow Funds.”
The reaction was instantaneous. By noon, three of David’s biggest investors had pulled their funding from his latest multi-million-dollar project, The Meridian Towers. Without their capital, construction halted immediately. The cranes sat idle against the gray autumn sky, a giant, public symbol of David’s impending ruin.
David sat in his office, watching his stock prices plummet. His phone was ringing off the hook, but he couldn't bring himself to answer it.
Vanessa burst into the office, her eyes red from crying. "David, what is happening? The bank just called. They froze our joint account! I tried to pay the deposit for the wedding venue, and the card was declined!"
"It's a temporary glitch," David lied, his voice hollow. "A routine check."
"A routine check doesn't freeze our personal accounts, David!" she screamed. "The news is saying you stole money! Are we going to lose the house?"
David looked at her. He realized, with a sudden, sickening clarity, that Vanessa didn't love him. She loved the $900,000 house, the sports cars, and the lifestyle he had promised her. Without the money, he was just an angry, middle-aged man facing prison time.
"Get out," David said quietly.
"What?"
"Get out of my office!" he roared.
Vanessa grabbed her designer handbag and stormed out, slamming the door.
Across the city, Claire was sitting in a beautifully lit corporate office. She wasn't hiding. In fact, she had just accepted a position as a senior consultant at a prestigious financial forensic firm, Vanguard Auditing. Her first assignment? To assist the federal government in analyzing the collapse of Sterling Developments.

Her boss, a sharp woman named Eleanor, smiled as she handed Claire her new security badge. "Welcome back to the game, Claire. I hear you already know the target inside out."
"I do," Claire said, pinning the badge to her lapel. "And I know exactly where the weak points are."
