The Ghost in the Accounting / Chapter 6 / 10

Chapter 6 - The Long GameOver the next month, the federal government’s case against David Sterling grew from a quiet whisper to a deafening roar.

Claire worked tirelessly, analyzing the mountain of financial data she had compiled. She was the ghost in the accounting, the invisible hand that guided the investigators through David’s complex web of fraud. She knew every shell company, every fake invoice, and every hidden bank account.

But she didn't let the drama consume her. Her primary focus remained Noah.

Every afternoon, she picked him up from school, and they spent their evenings doing homework, cooking dinner, and building lego spaceships. Noah’s anxiety had completely vanished. He was thriving in his new school, his grades were up, and he had made several friends.

One Saturday afternoon, Noah looked up from his drawing. "Mom?"

"Yes, sweetie?"

"Is Dad ever coming back?"

Claire knelt beside him, taking his small hands in hers. "No, Noah. He's not. But you have me, and we have our own home now. Are you okay with that?"

Noah nodded, a small, genuine smile on his face. "Yeah. It’s quiet here. I like quiet."

Claire felt a wave of relief wash over her. She had endured twelve years of emotional abuse, neglect, and gaslighting, all to protect her son. Now, she was finally free, and so was he.

The next day, Claire received a call from Agent Vance.

"Claire, we have enough. We’re executing the search warrants tomorrow morning. I wanted to give you a heads-up."

"Thank you, Marcus," Claire said, her voice steady. "Let me know when it's done."
