the fact that the girl you tried to break became someone you could never control. You couldn't stand
the fact that my rank, my service, and my duty to this nation were real."
Agent Miller stepped forward, opening a leather portfolio containing several official federal
documents. "Lieutenant Frank Hale, you are also being served with a federal arrest warrant issued by
the District Court of Eastern Virginia. For the past six months, the FBI and the Department of Justice
have been quietly investigating the Ashford Police Department for systemic corruption, bribe-taking,
and obstruction of justice. Your name, Lieutenant, is on several of those files."
Frank's mouth fell open, his eyes darting to his son Kyle, who was crying silently on the floor.
"No... that’s not true! I’m a good cop! I’ve served this town for twenty years!"
"You've used your authority to extort local business owners and cover up illegal activities for
your friends," Agent Miller replied coldly. "We were planning to execute the warrants next week, but
your little display of armed violence against a United States General tonight has forced us to
accelerate our timeline. Your entire precinct is currently being raided by federal agents as we speak."
As if on cue, the radio on Frank’s shoulder flared to life, a frantic, static-filled voice screaming
through the speaker. Dispatch to Lieutenant Hale! We have federal agents at the station! They are
locking down the servers and arresting the chief! We need help! Lieutenant, do you copy?
Frank didn't answer. He couldn't. His entire world of petty power, local corruption, and unearned
respect was crumbling around him like a house of cards in a hurricane. He had thought he was
arresting a defenseless stepdaughter to teach her a lesson, but he had actually initiated the final,

catastrophic destruction of his own career and freedom.
