Chapter 7 - The Stand at the CourthouseTwo days later.

Despite my fractured pelvis and physical trauma, I refused to stay in the hospital bed for the emergency custody hearing.

I was wheeled into the County Courthouse in a wheelchair, surrounded by medical nurses, Lena Ortiz, and my legal counsel.

Grant and my mother were led into the courtroom in heavy iron chains, wearing bright orange inmate jumpsuits.

When Grant saw me sitting tall, proud, and fiercely determined in my wheelchair, his arrogant mask completely broke into pathetic, sweating panic.

The presiding judge slammed her gavel down, reading the severe charges: ATTEMPTED FIRST-DEGREE MURDER, CHILD KIDNAPPING, FORGERY OF JUDICIAL DOCUMENTS, AND EVIDENCE TAMPERING.

Bail was officially denied for both defendants.

The judge turned to me, her expression softening with profound respect. “Ms. Bennett, full, absolute legal and physical custody of Caleb and Sophie is granted to you permanently. A lifetime protective order is in effect immediately.”

Tears of overwhelming relief poured down my face as Lena handed my sweet, healthy babies into my lap.
