Chapter 2 - The Security Image on the TabletDetective Vance stepped up to my bed, her eyes sharp and professional as she held up the clear evidence sleeve.

“The document presented to the pediatric security desk bears a duplicate seal of Judge Patricia Vance’s signature,” Detective Vance explained. “Judge Vance is currently on judicial sabbatical in Europe. She hasn't signed an order in three weeks.”

Tears streamed down my cheeks as I tried to sit up, a sharp spike of agony tearing through my fractured pelvis.

“Detective... my babies,” I sobbed, clutching the hospital sheets. “Grant is dangerous. He lost custody because of alcohol abuse! If my mother helped him take them—”

“Your mother didn't just help him, Rachel,” Detective Vance interrupted, pulling up a secondary audio log on her radio. “She signed as the official guarantor on the temporary release form.”

The hospital social worker, Lena Ortiz, rushed to my side, placing a gentle, supporting hand on my shoulder. “Rachel, stay still. You’re bleeding through your bandages.”

“I don't care about the bandages!” I cried out. “Find my children!”

Detective Vance pressed her earpiece. “Units are already tracing Grant’s pickup truck. But there’s another detail you need to know, Rachel. The mechanic who towed your sedan from the highway just called our traffic division.”
