Chapter 1 - The Emergency Sitter DeadlineThe first sound I heard after the crash was metal folding around me. The second was my mother saying pickleball mattered more than my children.

I woke under white hospital lights with a fractured pelvis, two shattered ribs, and a surgeon telling me I might not walk for months. My one-year-old twins, Caleb and Sophie, had survived because their rear-facing car seats held. They were unhurt, but the hospitalâs emergency sitter could keep them for only twenty-four hours.
My hands shook as I called my mother.
âMom, I need you to take the babies tonight.â
Diane sighed as if I had interrupted dinner. âRachel, Iâm playing in the regional pickleball finals tomorrow. I have trained for six months.â
âI canât stand up.â
âYou always make everything an emergency.â
Then she hung up.
By noon, hospital social worker Lena Ortiz was standing beside my bed with a clipboard. âIf no approved relative comes, child protective services will arrange temporary foster placement.â
The words hit harder than the crash. My ex-husband, Grant, was not an option. A family-court order allowed him only supervised visits after he had driven drunk with the twins in his truck. He had spent eight months blaming me for âstealing his family.â
I called friends, neighbors, even my old college roommate in Ohio. No one could arrive before the sitterâs deadline.
At 4:10 p.m., Lena rushed back into my room, pale and breathless. âRachel, did you authorize someone to remove Caleb and Sophie?â
My heart stopped. âNo.â
She turned her tablet toward me. A grainy security image showed Grant pushing a double stroller through the hospital exit. Beside him walked my mother, still wearing her white pickleball skirt.
Lena swallowed. âThey presented an emergency custody order.â
âThatâs impossible,â I whispered. âNo judge would give Grant unsupervised custody.â

The door opened behind her. A police detective stepped inside holding the document in a clear evidence sleeve.
âYouâre right,â she said. âBecause the judgeâs signature was forged.â
