THE FLASH DRIVE IN THE DARK / Chapter 8 / 10

Chapter 8 - The Woman Who Came Through the WindowA year after Daniel's arrest, Vanessa visited me.

She brought a small box.

“I found this.”

Inside was the dress she had worn the night she climbed through my window.

The fabric was torn.

Her palms had scarred.

I stared at it.

“I almost died that night.”

“So did I.”

She smiled.

“I know.”

We sat quietly.

“I never told you why I really came.”

“Why?”

She took a breath.

“Because Daniel told me he was going to kill you.”

I already knew.

“But I thought you were helping him.”

“I was supposed to.”

She looked at the dress.

“When I heard him say it, I realized I had become the kind of person who watched evil happen because she was afraid.”

I understood.

“I was afraid too.”

She looked at me.

“You were trapped.”

“So were you.”

“No.”

She shook her head.

“I had choices.”

I reached across the table.

“You chose differently.”

She smiled.

That evening, we attended the foundation's first annual dinner.

More than two hundred guests came.

Women who had escaped abusive marriages.

Families who had recovered stolen assets.

Lawyers.

Counselors.

Financial experts.

My father gave a speech.

Then Vanessa stood.

She told the room about fear.

About shame.

About the danger of believing that silence keeps people safe.

When she finished, the room stood and applauded.

I watched her cry.

Then I realized something.

The woman who had once been the enemy of my marriage had become one of the people who helped save my life.

Life was strange.

People were complicated.

And sometimes redemption arrived through the least expected door.

Or window.

Later that night, my mother came to me.

She handed me a letter.

“From Daniel.”

I didn't want to read it.

But eventually I opened it.

He apologized.

He said prison had forced him to understand what he had done.

I didn't know whether I believed him.

I didn't need to.

I folded the letter.

“What will you do with it?” my mother asked.

“Nothing.”

I threw it away.

She smiled.

“That's probably the healthiest answer.”

I nodded.

For years, Daniel had occupied space in my mind.

Now he didn't deserve it.
