Chapter 1 - The Woman at the WindowMy name is Evelyn Carter.

For twelve years, I believed I knew exactly who my husband was.
To everyone else, Daniel Carter was charming, successful, generous, and impossibly calm under pressure. He owned a growing investment company in San Diego, drove expensive cars, donated to local charities, and never seemed to raise his voice in public.
Behind closed doors, he was different.
The first time he broke a glass because dinner was late, I convinced myself he had simply had a terrible day.
The first time he grabbed my wrist hard enough to leave bruises, I told myself I must have pushed him too far.
The first time he threatened to destroy my life if I ever left him, I believed him.
After twelve years, I had become very good at making excuses for a man who never made excuses for himself.
Then I found the photographs.
Daniel was kissing Vanessa Reed, his executive assistant, in the back seat of his company car.
There were dozens of photographs.
Different locations.
Different days.
The truth wasn't one mistake.
It was a relationship.
When I confronted him that night, he didn't deny anything.
He simply stared at me.
Then he smiled.
That smile frightened me more than anger ever could.
“You've been following me?”
“I hired someone to investigate you.”
“You had no right.”
“I had every right. You're my husband.”
His expression hardened.
“You should have trusted me.”
“I did.”
I held up the photographs.
“And you made me regret it.”
The vase hit the wall beside my head.
I screamed.
Daniel crossed the room.
My phone disappeared from my hand.
Then he grabbed me.
I fought.
I cried.
I begged.
Nothing mattered.
Eventually, he tied my wrists and ankles and dragged me into the upstairs guest room.
“You'll stay here until you remember who controls this family.”
He locked the door.
For hours, I lay on the floor.
I listened to his footsteps downstairs.
Then silence.
I thought he had left.
I was wrong.
Around two in the morning, I heard something scrape against the window.
I froze.
The curtains moved.
A shadow appeared outside.
Then the window opened.
A woman climbed through.
Vanessa.
Daniel's mistress.
Her black dress was torn.
Her hands were bleeding from the stone balcony.
She dropped onto the floor and immediately crawled toward me.
“Don't scream.”
I stared at her.
“Why are you here?”
She pulled out a small knife and cut my restraints.
“Daniel passed out downstairs.”
I rubbed my wrists.
“You expect me to believe you?”
“No.”
She handed me a passport and a cheap prepaid phone.
“Then believe this.”
She placed a black flash drive in my palm.
“I copied Daniel's laptop.”
I stared at it.
“Why?”
“Because you don't know what Daniel really is.”
She told me the drive contained offshore accounts, hidden companies, fraudulent transactions, and evidence that Daniel had been stealing money from investors.
“Why would you help me?”
Vanessa looked away.
“Because I finally realized what he does to people who stop being useful.”
We escaped through the window.
At a roadside motel, Vanessa showered while I opened the drive.
At first, everything she promised was there.
Bank transfers.
Shell companies.
Property purchases.
Then I found a folder.
VANESSA — OWNERSHIP TRANSFER
My hands went cold.
Inside were property deeds.
Corporate documents.
Millions of dollars transferred into Vanessa's name.
Then I saw a document dated three days in the future.
I stared at the date.
Impossible.
Unless the transfer had already been prepared.
The bathroom door opened.
Vanessa stepped out.
She looked at the laptop.
Then at me.
“You opened that folder.”
I said nothing.
She locked the motel door.
“Evelyn,” she whispered, “if you think those documents mean the money belongs to me, you still don't understand why Daniel chose you.”
“Why did he choose me?”
Vanessa's face became pale.
“Because you were never just his wife.”
She paused.
May you like
“You were his cover.”
And suddenly, the entire twelve-year marriage looked different.
